Not Sure If You've Got A Pullet Or Cockerel? Click Here! Thread 2

At what age can you in general does a roosters comb redden?
My baby is 3 weeks ( I think he's a Japanese because his body is the same size as my other bantams but he/she is so short. ( no leg problems ).
For gender purposes capturing the comb color accurately is key. To do that, natural lighting is best and you shouldn't be handling the birds. Yes, it takes longer to get the right shots, but you can be sure that the coloring is as accurate as possible. Artificial lighting can distort the color, and handling can make them flush.

That makes a lot of sense. I was going to ask if during molting you're suppose to be hands off since the feathers coming in is painful wouldn't the same apply to chicks feathering? Should I not touch at all?
This evening I will attempt to "catch " better photos of the speed demons. Thank you for your advice.

My cockerels have usually started to get color in their combs anywhere between 2 and 6 weeks - if they start to turn pink they are most probably a cockerel. Pullets don't usually get color till they get close to laying.
