I can speak from experience though that this can backfire at times.

Our girls were hiding eggs left and right, so I locked them up for the morning. It worked for a little while, but then they REALLY dropped off - I had gone too far and they weren't getting enough light to keep laying. Now I have a light in the coop to wake them up before dawn. That way I get all my eggs and they get a full day out.

Thanks Frank...I've been putting my light on at dusk when I put them up for the evening and turn it off at 11pm. I think I'll set my timer to come on at 5am instead and NOT worry about evening hours!
 
Well, the other night my dear hubby was walking from the shop to the house, and low and behold he ran across a shiny mad bull snake. The bull snake was straight across from the chicken coop. I think I found the culprit. Lastnight, we caught a skunk in the livetrap. Will wait to see what else we catch.
