not zoning issue- INSURANCE issue!

Says it's standard practice in my insurance paperwork, might be a state or loan requirement. She was just here a few days ago and made note of the new roof and new fence.... rates to be reduced for the new roof.
Didn't say anything about the chickens, inside or outside the house. Already have my renewal paperwork too.

I have State Farm.

They didn't even ask what kind of dog I have. (Chow Chows are on some states' "agressive breed" lists and some companies won't insure if you own one)

They've never been to the house for inspections either, although I *think* they said they did a drive-by before we actually moved in. I assume they just wanted to make sure there actually was a house to insure, so I couldn't claim that it burned down a month later.

Standard practice?! No. I have owned various houses since 1978 and have NEVER had an insurance agent come out to the house for any reason, including investigating claims! Nor has anyone ever questioned about owning farm or any other animals.

I'd never had anyone come out before we bought and insured our small farm in Wisconsin. They came out and looked at the buildings and said everything would be covered except our small dairy barn. The roof needs re-shingling and most of the windows are broken. They said if we fixed it up in the future we could add it to our policy.

OP, since you changed companies at the request of your insurance agent, it seems like he/she should be liable to find you new coverage? Insurance is to cover risks (fire is the one people think about most, but there are other risks such as theft, liability for injury on your property, storm damage and others. The concerns that I think the insurance company might have is whether they are covering a business, which is different than covering a home and liability related to the animals.

Most states have pretty strict regulation of insurance companies. You might check with your state to see if they can refuse to cover you for having chickens when you meet your zoning guidelines, but their guidelines are stricter.

When you think about what is more likely to actually cause damage at a property, isn't it amazing that they'll insure homes with children but not homes with chickens?

There is more than one "Farmers" insurance. There is Farmers Insurance Group, Farmer's Mutual, Farm Bureau, and probably others. We have Farmer's Ins Group and have had no problems. My coop was built in the 1930's and is very close to the house. They have never had a problem with it. They are www.farmers.com. We had a hail storm that caused roof damage. Farmers replaced the roofs on our house and all of the out buildings (including the coop) quickly and fairly. Every claim we have ever had was handled lightening fast. We had Hartford at one point, and they were garbage.

So true! I've yet to read a new story about rampant vandalism of a house by chickens.

Maybe they're referring to the addiction of owning chickens???!!!

Same here--State Farm for our home and our rental property. We had a Doberman and now a Malinois---both considered "aggressive" breeds (more like lap dogs, LOL) They didn't even ask us and knew I managed a veterinary hospital at the time. We are getting chickens in the spring and live in the suburbs and I didn't even think to mention it.
