NOTHIN ON THE INTERNET ABOUT THIS? What does it mean? BLOODY EGG!

My favorite hen has a soft shelled egg problem, and has broken three soft shelled eggs. I don’t think it’s calcium because she is getting a ton, so it must be something else. Anyway, we took her to the vet the first time, and they gave us meds to give her to prevent infection. Spaying/hormones to stop her from laying, are not an option. This morning I discovered a soft shelled egg broken underneath her- but instead of yolk it was full of blood EVERYWHERE inside of the broken shell. I know about blood spots and it is not that. There is nothing in the internet about what is happening with her, absolutely no one has said anything about a broken Egg filled with blood. But maybe someone can help?

Dear chicken friend.. the fact that your hen is getting plenty of calcium and continuing to lay soft eggs is very likely a shell gland defect. Your description of blood inside an egg sounds like she may be having more serious reproductive system disorders, infection, or possibly cancer.

How old is your hen? What is her name? What is fed on a regular basis, including treats and supplements? What breed is she? Any photo of her or the egg in question?

One way to decrease laying is to decrease light exposure time.
