November 2016 Hatch-a-long!!

Pics
DD just found our 1st pip. (among the quail eggs due to hatch today) Never hatched quail, so I'm not sure if they hatch quickly from pip to chick or if they're more like chickens & the pips show up about a day before hatch. Guess I'll find out soon.

Chicken eggs went into lockdown yesterday & are due to hatch Thanksgiving. BTW- does anyone else have to adjust temps after increasing humidity? I always do.

The blue egg gene is closely associated with the pea comb gene in many mixes. So often if the offspring inherit the pea comb, they may inherit the blue shell base. Of course, if you use a Cream Legbar in your EEs, that association is not there!

I haven't really found leg color to correlate with egg color very much in my birds.

I haven't noticed any tell tail sign for the blue eggs. I have four ee hens, all with blue legs and pea combs. Two lay blue eggs and two lay brown eggs.

Saw the 1st & only pip this morning at 7am.
At 8:30am we noticed 2 more pips &

Congrats Faraday40 on the itsy bitsy baby quails! They're adorable.
Mima's (my silkie mom) entire hatch this time has been weird but moving along...maybe a bit faster than I anticipated. I went out a few minutes ago because Mima was off the nest, just to see the eggs. My first reaction was oh, no one is broken! Then, that sure sounds like little peeping. Aha, it Is peeping!
21 days completes at 4:30 Tomorrow afternoon. I figured I'd see chicks tomorrow or thursday.
Is there any reason for concern? Maybe one is wearing a watch!
One egg is pipped (pardon me that I really don't know the proper terms.) around the middle at least as much as I can see, maybe even underneath. I saw no other pips but everyone sounded fine.
There are 3 10 week old silkie chicks in the same enclosure. They sleep on the eggs with their mom. I've never removed the daddy roo but I've never had chicks in for hatch day. I'm worried that trying to move them now might cause too much upset.
Ideas? Suggestions? And please if anyone can correct or add to my terms I'd apprciate it!

My broody is an intense incubator, rarely gets off the nest & usually hatches sooner. In the summer it takes her only 19 days. Cooler weather can take up to 21 days. I'd leave her in the nest until all eggs hatch (or she leaves it on her own with her chicks.) Once hatched, you can easily move the family. Mama will stick with them like glue. For their own safety, I move mine into a rabbit cage inside the run. That way the flock can see the mama & chicks, but the chicks can't get stuck somewhere, fall, or wander off. Once they're about a week old, i leave the cage door open so mama can take them on field trips but return for food & water. It's such a fun thing to watch, so get lots of pics. (Also helps to label with age of chicks, so you can look back for reference.)

Here are some of her past broods....

Vocab:
Pip= little peck in shell (then comes a rest period)
Zip = long opening cut around perimeter of egg.
Once zipped, the chick pushes in opposite directions to = Hatch

Thanks so much for the beautiful pics and info!
Now I can say I saw a zip! I had thought the colder weather might delay their hatch a bit. Of course--everything seeming opposite with this hatch--they're trying to get out early. I never stop smiling at how sweet the hatching process is. Mima must be wearing herself out. She's had 3 hatches this year. one in mid summer, next in fall and this one! RE: the cage and separation which I think is a great idea, I think the way their house is built is challenging to set a cage up. The silkie couple has their own house apart from the backyard bunch who are literally in the back yard.
I'm going to see if I can figure out a way to do what you're suggesting.
I'm worried about the night time lower temperatures but I know Mima will do a great job.
I can't wait to post pics! And see pics. It seems like lots of folks have Thanksgiving hatches!
