I candled about half of my eggs and I saw some movement. About half had movement, 1 didn't have anything and the others look like they had a shadow over about 3/4 of the egg, but no movement that I could see. I could see a saddle shape in 1 egg, but there was no movement. It is day 8 so should they all be moving?

Are the ones with shadows, but no movement growing. I wish I knew more about this. I can't see anything with the maran eggs beside the shadow.

Anyone have any advice?
You're doing a good job.

Not all the embryos will be moving when you candle. The light may make them react, but they could also just be resting. You should see the shadow like you described & no longer have a brightly glowing or "clear" egg. If you're unsure, just put a small mark on the ? egg & recandle that one in a few days.

As some one mentioned, the only eggs that need to be tossed ASAP are leaky, weeping, or smelly eggs. You can take a few days to verify that it's not developing..

They are separated now for at least another week it will be 12 littles in w/ 9 bigs it's a variety of breeds I can always set up another box too I want them integrated before I put them all out into the coop is all not in a rush to move the littles thank you
You could also try just putting 2 bigs into the cage with all the littles. If they get along, add another 2-3 bigs the next day & so on. Chicks are not as difficult to merge as adult hens. Also if the littles have the advantage of outnumbering the bigs, then the bigs won't be as pushy.

DD candled the chicken eggs for her sci fair experiment. (Can you hatch store eggs?)
Her test numbers are small because I don't want a lot of chicks in the house.
6 backyard eggs = all developing
6 fertile farmer's market eggs = 5 developing & 1 blood ring
(We never could find fertile chicken eggs at the grocery store. Cracked open several brands)

I'm pretty surprised that the farmer's market eggs are doing that well. They were washed, refrigerated, & driven around. I know we were given eggs that were less than a week old.

This weekend, DD will candle the quail incubator. I'm very curious to see how those are doing.
10 store eggs
10 farmer's market eggs
10 backyard eggs

Thanks so much for the support!!
There is so much difference between having a zero hatch and having one chick. I have one chick!

Little Daisy is strong and healthy. I am so glad I assisted, and very grateful for the advice from my BYC pals. 4 week old Cleopatra (a Silkie from the October-Hatch-a-Long) has stepped up to cuddle Daisy. It is so cute when Daisy snuggles under the Silkie. I wonder how that will look when the Wyandotte is three times the Silkie's size!

Haven't been on all day! Congratulations!! They will be joined at the hip as Juveniles then older. :) Always together.

You will see swimming little eye balls..and, a lot of veins in viable eggs. Having said that, if..you are questioning anything in others..don't toss them yet. Wait until day 10. You will see a big difference while candling next time. You will know the which ones are viable for sure, and the ones that aren't. Unless...you have some really really dark eggs, like Marans, and those dark blue eggs..hard to see in. Always save the questionables.

It's been about six hours, and all the veins have receded but one. Most of the yolk is absorbed but we are letting it rest while it finishes up. Fingers crossed.

I know this was hrs ago, and you probably have a chick by now. At this point, I have the chicks head straightened out..helps keep the legs/hips straighten out too.
Photos? :)

Thank you! I did see some things swimming around, but not quite sure what I am seeing. I'm trying to do it fast so I don't mess up the eggs. There are 39 eggs in there so I didn't want to mess them up by taking too much time.

The Marans are very dark and shadowy but maybe next time like you said I can see more.

Time to get the brooder ready:)
