November/December "Hatch-a-Long"

Okay. I have 1 marans egg that pipped 24 hours ago. 14 hours ago it was 25% zipped. This morning, no progress. I can see he is still breathing in there. the membrane looks white but not over-dry. it's still clear in some areas I think. it is at a hard angle to see in the bator but I don't want to open it because there are other pips.. also read that marans can have a thicker shell and are harder to get out of. no idea if that is true.

I have never seen one get stuck in the middle of unzipping before. Should I help? Wait longer - 40hrs? pipped 24hrs, zipped and stuck for 14hrs
Oh good grief....................It is such a hard call.......
My input is this.......If you have not read the thread on when and how to assist........I would do that first..........
If it were my decision.......I don't know. I think I would try to help if I were certain the pipped eggs would be OK.
I take my incubator into the bathroom.....run the hot water until everything is steamy and quickly grab the egg.
While working on the egg, I wrap it in a warm, wet wash cloth. This also seem to help if the membrane is stuck.........
Sometimes you can just finish the zip and let it get out of the rest of the egg itself.
I also have a mister.hand held used for misting plants.....I mist the inside of the bator just a few squirts taking the eggs out and putting it ( or chick ) back.
Good luck with your decision.........

Sorry if this is not well written...just waking up.

okay thank you very much.. I have read it probably 20 times lol.. just so nervous that my intervention could harm more than hurt. I will give it a couple more hours and prepare the steamy bathroom, thank you so much, getting you advice is so helpful you have no idea :)

I helped a couple out in my first hatch last week, had a humidity fail. I just used a damp paper towel, and very gently tore the membrane after sponging it to soften the area.
Mine were quite stuck. Went super slow. The chicks were ready to get out.

Once I had given them a tiny bit of room and a little more time, I let them wriggle and jiggle, they kicked out and rolled into my hand.
One is the biggest and the other is the smallest.

Of course now Ive read more and would be completely paranoid about attempting it, because of opening the incubator.
The big chick (sherbert) had been mostly zipped for over 24 hours when I realised it was a problem, the smaller one was clearly shrink wrapped.
Good luck :fl

Alright.. that was a lot easier than I expected!! He was clearly ready to come out.

I was super careful pulling back the shell. I made a zip line all the way around. then I could see that the membrane was stuck to him, glued basically. The top of the membrane was sort of connecting his wing and torso, hardened, so it couldn't unravel even with all the shell off... the membrane was glueing the chick together. I could also see it was more yellow/brown than white, as I thought earlier. I helped it peel the super-glued membrane off and put it back in the bator. then he was able to unravel his neck and get out!!!

THANK YOU! I am pretty sure that saved that chick's life!!!

edit: /\/\/\ oooh keepsmumsane beautiful photos! I wish I had the presence of mind to take pics rofl

It's been 14 hrs since Ive heard any chirping from inside egg on day 23, no piping from any of the 8 eggs I have. Temps and humidity have been good. Not sure what the problem is

Yeah I'm super paranoid about tossing. But just really hoping to see some evidence that not everything is lost at this point.
I'm nearing lockdown on my first ever hatch, so that's my experience. But I candled on days 7, 10, and 14...it was obvious who the developing eggs were. The quitter had only a small dark spot compared to the others that almost filled the shell at day 14. Like the size of a dime instead of a big walnut. Also, if you watch long enough you can see movement on the live ones. Good luck!

Currently have 21 eggs in the incubator, most of which are banties. And since he screams bloody murder whenever I leave him alone, I got him a carrier from a neighbor (definitely not my style). And yes, he has a poopy butt, but his vent is clear so I'm leaving it be.

a wellsummer is out! and another maran is zipping very quickly! I'm relieved they don't appear to be so dry.

the first maran has deformed feet/toes.. should I do something about it? Will they self-correct over time? his outermost toe is curling underneath the foot, he is walking on it. should I try to make a bootie to flatten it out? what would I even make it out of?!
