November/December "Hatch-a-Long"

17 days ago I set 2 little Coturnix quail eggs, then another 32 a few days later. Of the two, one never developed and the other..hatched today! It had pipped and not done anything for 30-some hours and I was getting ready to help it a little when I heard cheeps from that general direction that didn't sound like my 3 week old chicks. Speedy little feller when he wants to be! I know a single quail would be nothing to those who hatch dozens or hundreds of them at a time, but he's my first little quail and I'm in love lol. I knew they had to be tiny to fit in those little eggs, but I didn't know just how tiny! Itty bitty!! Sadly, he is a loner until my bantam eggs hatch Saturday (hopefully) and the remaining 13 CQ eggs hatch Sunday or Monday, so we'll be spending a lot of quality time together. :•)

Hello everyone! I am new to chickens and this amazing website. We got our first chicks back in March. Got our first egg August 15th. My golden sex link went broody and started stealing eggs. So we ate letting her hatch her first batch now. Egg 1 was laid Sept 15, egg 2,3,4 were laid sept 18 and egg 5 was the 20th. All eggs show development, 4 are mostly all full when I shine the flashlight through them. If I've done the math properly, the first chick should arrive this Sunday. Do you think it is realalistic that all the eggs can hatch with such a time difference between them?

Hi there, and congrats on your broody. I just wanted to let you know that she's going to get up and leave the egg that went under her on the 20th. By that time she'll be up and teaching the hatched chicks to eat and drink so if you want to hatch it you'll have to get an incubator. She may also leave the eggs laid on the 18th if the egg laid on the 15th hatches - it may be best to take the earliest and latest eggs and just let her have all the eggs she started incubating on the 18th. Or you might want to take the chick that hatches this Sunday and raise it in a brooder till the others start hatching and then give it back so she doesn't get up and abandon all the eggs for it.

that's fun....there was someone in the June or July hatch a long that did that with farm fresh free range eggs and she got 3 chicks, I believe 3, from those eggs

yeah I am hoping for a better result because they were so fresh and didn't have to ship far, but either way I'll be happy. I want a few leghorns so I'm hoping extra hard :) I also am using this to find out which of my new hens are laying....if they come out looking like a Delaware, RIR, or Easter Egger then I will get my answer. I sort of think it's the easter egger and she's giving me brown eggs...odd. They said she was americauna but I'm not believing it :) my Roo is a cuckoo maran.

no she was gathering her clutch...when she started sitting to incubate full time is when you start counting...they usually gather their clutch for a week

I think if the first chick is due this Sunday, then the hen has been sitting since the 15th. Plus she said there was a time difference between them and that she has been stealing them as the other hens laid them. At least that's what I got from her post, if not ignore me :duc

Oh, Heidisgran, I forgot to ask, how are your faverolles doing? I think you might have gotten yours from the same person I got mine from so they may be related :)
