November/December "Hatch-a-Long"

I think if the first chick is due this Sunday, then the hen has been sitting since the 15th. Plus she said there was a time difference between them and that she has been stealing them as the other hens laid them. At least that's what I got from her post, if not ignore me :duc
pyxis is is correct, originally Flaps was sitting on only one egg then 3 days later, the others were laid and sat on. Then the last 5 days after the 1st. I do not have an incubator. If I take the first egg out after it hatches and keep it in the brooder till the next three hatch, will she hatch the last one or should I remove those three as they hatch too?

Oh, Heidisgran, I forgot to ask, how are your faverolles doing? I think you might have gotten yours from the same person I got mine from so they may be related

If you want her to hatch them all, I'd take them all as they hatch. Five days is a pretty big gap and I'm postive she'll get up before the last one hatches. You might want to just raise all the earlier chicks yourself and let her have the last one because by the time the last one hatches, the older chicks are gonna be too old to imprint on momma hen.

Quote: okay this is what I have experienced.
if you take the chick so that she hatches the others then the 1st chick won't listen to her...to much time will have passed
if she keeps the chick and the next ones due hatch that might go okay because you have about 3 days before she'll leave the nest to raise the chicks but she might leave the last egg.
if it were me I would take the first chick until the second batch hatch....give the 1st chick back to her that same night when they're asleep...then she will most likely stay on the nest to hatch the last! you should make sure she's eating and drinking especially at the end because she'll be on the nest extra long!!

I think that sounds like a good plan best of luck!
what kind of hen is she....I know my orpington mama would do what I've described above...as long as that first chick isn't separated from her too long!

Doing good! I got them from piperomar on here, who also sells on Ebay so I think we have related babies. So far 8 out of 18 are still chugging along, which isn't all that bad considering the post office lost them over the weekend and mishandled them so badly one was literally shattered, most had detached air cells, and one even has an air cell on the side instead of up top.

Congrats on the Orloffs too! Such a gorgeous breed.

no I didn't get mine from that breeder...oh don't get me started on the post...lost your eggs...UGH
I witnessed my mail lady fumble with mine and drop them, still in the vehicle, before she got them in the mail box...not sure which box...2 came yesterday
how far along or yours?
as it's getting time to set I'm getting more anxious for these, really looking forward to all these breeds!
I have some mutts due next week
fl.gif
hope most of them are from my sex link...I know 2 most likely are, the chicks look dark in the shell, I'm pretty sure I mistook a orpington egg for my sex links egg because inside is very yellow....lol....oh well it will be loved in the chicken heaven out here we've created!

Mine are actually due in two batches, since piperomar was nice enough to send me seven more eggs after the fiasco with the first ones, but the first ones actually lock down on Saturday and I'm so excited for them! They'er locking down with two eggs from by barred rock which will be sex links because they're covered by a buff orp and two EE eggs that should hatch into olive eggers. Oh, and one welsh harlequin egg :D
