November/December "Hatch-a-Long"

My car has a specail turkey cubby.

First time I left Max in the car to wait for me. I was gone about 3 minutes. I could hear Max calling me as soon as I walked outside.

Tomorrow we will be parking cars for the Alabama football game to raise money for 3 animal rescues. 6AM.

I set 26 texas a&m quail eggs last Saturday. It's been driving me nuts so I candled 7 of them I saw very distinct veins in 3/7 but nothing in the remaining 4. It gives me hope since this is only my second time incubating and my first time with shipped eggs. Although I was wishing for an extremely high hatch rate... We can dream can't we? Lol

Official tallies are in! I candled all of the remaining 26 eggs. I started with 30...
I set 4 cracked and so far 1 good 2 quitters and 1 clear. The non cracked eggs - 3 clear, 4 quitters, 1 ?, and 14 good.

Although it's not quite what I would like to see it gives me hope! On the bright side I just need 1 male and 1 female to get more! :) lol

I have an EE rooster that started crowing in the brooder at a weeks old. He stopped when I put hi with the big girls outside. Hehas olny crowed one time at me in the middle of the afternoon. Until today. I have to be somewhere really early so I fed everyone at 4:30am. I turned on the porch light and he crowed. I turned it off and he stopped. So funny. He will probably get a beat down from the hens today for acting like a rooster. He is hen pecked.

Max and are are going to helppark cars for University of Alabama homecoming game to help raise money for 3 animal rescues. Have to be ther at 6 AM.

No nap for us today.

So my hatch is taking forever! It's been 48 hours since the first pip, 24 since the first hatch, and four of the eggs hadn't budged. So I went ahead and put an artificial pip on each to see if they were even viable because mama might try to leave the nest with her chicks at any moment (and the chicks that HAVE hatched are getting anxious)... No way the candle them, B&C maran eggs... Of the dozen I got 7 have live chicks, three of which hadn't even pipped yet. I put a bit of wet paper towel over the holes I made to keep the membrane from drying out... I hope they hatch before mama bird moves!

All babies from both batches hatched! YAY! Back to my 100% hatch rate streak :) I have eggs from my Golden Laced Wyandotte with the Crested Cream Legbar roo in the bator. I have one from each day for about a week and a couple Marans crosses thrown in here and there. First one goes in lockdown in the hatcher on the 9th so I finally get to clean out the hatcher and disinfect everything. its the used Hovabator Genesis that has been going since the day I bought it. That thing rocks! Temp is spot on, so is the humidity. I don't have to mess with much of anything and it holds everything like a charm. I am so lucky I found it on Craigslist!! It deserves a small break and a bath :) Can't wait for my pretty blue eggs to arrive, but they will be going in the Incukit/LG bator till lockdown anyway. I don't expect much from shipped eggs anymore. Somewhere between North Texas and everywhere else is someone that really hates chickens - I am convinced. The most chicks I have ever gotten from shipped eggs was 3 Barred Rocks from 20 eggs. Bredas were 0 of 20. South American endangered breeds were 2 of 40. Welsummers 0 of 20 (one did hatch and then die). 0 of 10 Bielefelders. So my expectations from shipped eggs is basically that I enjoy flushing money down the drain, LOL! But I will keep my fingers crossed and hope for more.

Interesting about your shipped egg rate. I am new to this and figured shipping eggs should work, since it's so common. I can't imagine doing it with such a low return! Since I can't really tell what's going on inside my 4 marans, it's hard to say for sure, but so far, it seems that the danger to my eggs has been inside the nest, rather than the shipping, since one got cracked and another crushed. (both of the Legbars - coincidence?) But, I'm skeptical about my air cells. I'll see what happens if they make it to hatch, and in the future, I'll look for some local eggs! It's challenging since I live in an urban area where roosters are technically not allowed.
