I moved my chicks all outside to the outside brooder coop since its starting to turn cool I want them to have a chance to acclimate more easily. One end of the coop is nice and hot and the other isn't so they can go back and forth without shocking their system so much. I have some odler chicks that have been out for a while and are used to getting put up in there at night. Well they were mad and wanting out so I decided to leave the little door open for a while. I think one of our roos went in and killed a chick
One of my only 3 Apenzeller Spitzhauben (cute little splash mohawk chicken) that I hatched myself. I could kick myself. It was such a bad day otherwise I wasn't thinking straight. The 2 year old woke up at 1:45am - 15 minutes before I was due to go to bed and then stayed up till 4:30am - one hour before we had to get up and get his brother ready and to school. So I got 1 hour sleep and then had a very cranky, screaming, half naked two year old I had to drag to the car and wrestle into a car seat. I so wasn't thinking "one of the roos will kill my chick while I am gone". *sigh* Then we came home and I had to carry my shoeless 2 year old (he's nearly 40 lbs and I am disabled with back, hip, leg and foot problems from 9 years in the army so that alone HURTS) and then I fell up the porch stairs carrying him. I managed to NOT drop him but ripped up my entire body pretty good. And then I found my dead chickie
and have also concluded my ENTIRE flock of over 100 rare/endangered birds - most of which are between a week and 2 months old - are passing around the fowl pox virus thanks to the recent rain and bloom of mosquitoes after our record breaking dry spell. I.CAN'T.WIN.... UGH!
And 2 days ago my dogs ate another chicken - a golden laced wyandotte roo. Luckily I hated that roo and he bit me every opportunity he got. But that makes 20 chickens they have killed since April. They went under the crawl space under our house and out the other side through a wall to get to them. So - more fencing in my future with my messed up body - fun....OMG! I am so sorry - that is a fear of mine every time I candle. Most of the time now I don't even lift the eggs out of the turner. I just open the top and shine the light down in them.Don't read this post if you don't want to cry....![]()
