November/December "Hatch-a-Long"

Sara woke me from a nap knocking on the doggie door. I let her in. When she was little she slept in the laundry room. She wanted to check out the laundry room as a possible location for her egg. She is so serious. She is on top of the wood chip bag. Maybe that will be the one. If I can train my chickens to lay their eggs in the house, I will be thrilled. Then if the go broody, I can keep an eye on them. Oh yeah! Go Sara go!

I am already aware that I am strange but so are my pets so, we all feel comfortable.

WARNING: Skip this post if you have a queasy stomach.

What causes multiple malpositionings when using an automatic turner? So far 4 silkies that have pipped have all been upside down in their shells and have died. I put the larger end up in the incubator but when I received them, the narrow end was up in the carton used to ship them. The air cells were on the larger end. I'm a little worried that none of the 4 remaining will survive either. Thus far, it hasn't happened to any of the other types of eggs and that is the only difference I can tell between them. One of the little ones did have scissor beak though so maybe that was a blessing.

20 minutes later: This latest one (#5) died in the shell so I thought. I set it aside (still in the incubator) and went about my chores. It started chirping at me. I went to assist since it was really dried out and I couldn't find the beak. Started to peel the shell off to see how it was positioned. All of a sudden it started to bleed (but not where I was working), so I stopped. I held it (still in its' shell) as it died. When I went to take the shell off (which was kind of stinky), I found something rather disturbing.

What, pray tell, is this?! Is that the internal organs that developed on the outside? Is it a Siamese twin? A tumor?

That is the yolk sack that has not been absorbed as far as I can tell. ETA: I had one the other day that pipped through a major vein and bled out inside the shell like this. By the time I actually saw it the blood was a black clotted pool in the bottom of the shell. Mine also ruptured the yolk sack and there was liquid yellowy goo everywhere. It was horrific and so sad that pipping through veins is such a toss up for every single chick.
