November/December "Hatch-a-Long"

yeah I could find some of them available as an individual chick.. but the random 12 pack doesnt seem to be for sale.. maybe I am blind though.. I will go look again :)

I'm getting excited!! the blue splash and black splash wheatons are due to hatch next tues!!! I'm so happy the three made it through the roller coast ride here!!

Woo I can't wait! You ladies with blue wheatons are making me want some! Next hatch perhaps..

breeds in the bator:
11 BLR Wyandotte (1 quit early)
11 Welsummer eggs
4 BCMs (these were extras with the wellies)
2 Lavender Orpington eggs (lost 3)

my silkie hen is sitting on 4 silkie eggs X with mystery rooster (hoping for silkie or americana dad!)
and she also has 4 Swedish flower hen eggs, 2 of which I think are developing. its hard to candle her eggs

I'd say the blacks are indeed Birchen Marans. As I understand it, they usually hatch black and turn more greyish as they age. I *think* they're also the only feather-legged breed GF does, so that narrows it down pretty well.

I think we'll just have to wait and see on the rest. The majority of their breeds would hatch out chipmunky, so it's just a betting game at this age I think lol. Theoretically, they could all but the blacks be SFHs. Not likely, but still.

ETA: Just saw your new comment about all SFHs.. >_> Great minds..
I hope so. Those are pretty chickens. The pictures of the chicks on their site are grey but that doesn't mean they are all that color. I was thinking the same thing about the chipmunk ones.
can I ask how much you paid for 12 chicks? If they offer it on their website, I cannot find it..

PS this is so much FUN!! guessing chicks and comparing their photos

i love the last 5 pages lol

new incubator is stable.. 37% 99.5.. I will know in 2 days if they are all still alive in there! (d14)
I paid $150 plus $35 shipping. It's not on their site. I emailed and asked if they ever sold surplus hatching eggs. I thought it might be the only way I could afford Greenfire chicks. They said no to eggs but that in the fall they have the mix dozen chicks. I posted about it back when I found out but that was about 6 weeks ago I think. I really couldn't afford it but I figure I can sell some to make it more affordable. I have to figure out what they are first. I am glad you guys don't mind. I appreciate the help. ANd it fun for me too.

I am excited but impatient.

I saw prices..
your chicklets are fine...nothing was that extreme!! what breed are they?
I still don't know. I have emailed a couple times asking. I hope they send a list tomorrow. They were supposed to email me an invoice.

I can't wait to see your chicks.

Max was being so good at first. Standing over the box watching quietly. I picked up each chick, photographed, fed vitamin water, checked it's wings, feet and beak and tried my best to sex them. On the 9th or 10th chick, Max snapped and grabbed it's toe. I scolded Max and he behaved for a minute and then tried to yank the next chick out of my hand. He got in trouble. He pouted off to his corner of the room and didn't come out until all chicks were back in the brooder.

Jumping into this thread, I have my first eggs in the bator right now. Put 21 duck eggs in back on Oct 25 and 21 more chicken eggs on Nov 1. The ducks are Indian Runners and Welsh Harlequin/Indian Runner cross, the chicks are 11 Rhodebars and 10 mixes from my layer flock. Have candled the ducks a couple of times, they are doing great. Doing my best to be patient with the chickens, but I think I'm going to have to break down and candle them tomight :) I can't see making it to day 7 LOL

If you wait til day 7 you might get to see them move! :)

I have just been reading about the importance of not opening the bator too much, so I offer just a small word of discouragement for their wellbeing :)

Greenfire doesn't have black sex links.  I was thinking Marans but the only Marans they have are Birchen.  I think the Birchen chicks are more grey than black.
Those are Birchen Marans. Mine were very black when they were first hatched and as they feathered in stayed solid black unlike my Black Coppers. Then they got silver hackles as they got older

we also hatched our own chicks, I keep temp at 99 and it worked fine, we also had a peep born with a broken back I tried to help it hopeing it would fix it self. we had to turn them so I put eggs in a egg carton and just turn the whole thing at once then when we got to the point of 4 days left we took eggs out of carton, worked great.
