November Hatch-A-Long (2014)

Well, it's not the first time I messed up, I'm sure it wont be the last. I'll go wrap a paper towel around her shortly probably. She's just sitting in there moving her beak around and protesting if one of the hatched chicks messes with her so I'm sitting here eating chips and salsa till it''s time to go check her again.

Did you give her an air hole where you removed the shell? If so she may be just fine & not have to struggle too much to hatch.

Don't beat yourself up.

There was a slit but looked like it had sealed so I opened it up enough to see her beak. I'm more worried about the membrane drying out where I removed shell more than anything, I'm watching it to make sure it doesn't change colors or look like it's shrinking, added more very very warm water and just watching. She's doing ok so far so I'm trying not to open the incubator again unless it's really necessary.

My Humidty is at 60 percent and it is lockdown. I just can't seem to get it any higher. I even put in a wet cloth. The air is just soo dry this time of year.

Thank you everyone for the condolences, I knew his time was coming and I knew his poor old body was keeping him around but I don't believe he was very happy and he was getting worse quickly. I don't have any guilt but I do miss him already, even though he was sleeping 20 hours a day. He is in a much happier place now so I'm ok.

4 out of 5 eggs have hatched. The 5th one is malpositioned (sp?) but it did pip and it's still moving around here and there. I'm terrified to help it and I'm trying hard to leave it alone till tomorrow which is day 21. I wont to help it so bad but my daughters have threatened bodily harm to myself if I don't wait. I'm going to go read up on these guys that can't figure out the right side of the egg to pip on before I intervene. I am so happy with this hatch! The waiting was the hardest after they pipped and then just sat there for hours! UGH I'll get decent pics after they fluff up. This has been so much fun.

For a wrong end pip I give them 24 hours... it takes about that long for them to absorb their yolk because a wrong end pip is made instead of an internal pip. Good luck... most of my wrong end pippers make it and are healthy vital chicks!

How big of a hole did you make?

60 isn't bad. Just keep your eye on it and make sure to refill and rewet everything as needed.

Oh D,

You're fine. Wrap her in a wet paper towel and go to bed. Don't beat yourself up, that's a very small hole. Mine are bigger than quarters. I think you were very conservative and careful when you chose to intervene. No harm done.

That is great information, I didn't think of it like that! Strong little buggers. It seems to be taking her a very long time compared to the other chicks, while she was the last to pip she did so within minutes of everyone else. I've done what I can to keep any exposed membrane from shrinking but also trying not to give her any additional trouble zipping. I believe there is nothing more I can do without causing more damage and letting more humidity out so, I will stare at her one more time and go to bed.

Loving all the chicky-goodness!

D & Anti, you're keeping me up just so I can catch up and read the updates! Must sleep!

All, arctic front hitting North America this week. I think we have an Alaska member and a couple Canadians I remember posting. Warm thoughts to you all! I might get snow this week, definitely freeze. Make sure your backup plan is in place!
