I set my broody Australorp KoKo with 11 eggs yesterday so set to hatch November 2nd. Everyone welcome to join.
6 eggs are Crested Cream Legbar (CCL) x Red Star (my Red Star Marcy is a prolific layer 362/365 days in her first year). Hoping for some Olive eggers from F1 generation.
3 eggs are CCL x RIR
1 CCL x Australorp (I never saw them mate and only had 1 egg so more than likely infertile)
1 CCL x CCL . Its a pullet egg only 1.6 oz so not much hope from HOPE's egg.

Wishing myself and everyone who is setting their eggs now all the luck.

P.S. I am in Chicago so it will be interesting to see how the chicks fare in the cold with their mama.

I'll be in on this one :) Not sure when I'll be setting yet but I'm positive that I will be at some point. Just waiting on the eggs, lol.

Welcome in! What are your plans for brooding the chicks since you are also in the cold belt?

I have a separate coop just for brooding this year! Come spring it'll be full with the breed that belongs in it, but for now, it's a big brooder. It will have two heat lamps hooked up and, as an added benefit, two juvenile silkie pullets who don't mind at all when little ones crawl under them to keep warm. Gotta love those silkies! There will also, hopefully, be a bunch of slightly older chicks that they can huddle with if it gets really chilly.

I set some under a broody a few days ago. It is her first time brooding, so keep your fingers crossed with me! I'm in the mid-west, so it's an experiment on how the chicks will do. I have some other brand new ones, (it's addicting, so when I had yet another hen go broody, I was not disappointed!) and even though it's in the high 30's in the morning when I let them out, they are excited to get out and go. So I'm not too worried.

I have never hatched until recently, and I feel like having a hen mother chicks is *so* much easier then buying and brooding chicks to replenish my flock. So glad I had no idea what I was missing out on before, becaause i didnt have a setup to make it work until recently. Ha ha

You win some and you lose some! Broodies are great but if you don't handle the chicks from the beginning, they never step near you except for treats.

I have heard that. For our purposes, as long as she keeps their fluffy baby bodies alive and healthy, I will be pleased. I do take very good care of my girls, and they take care of us. We just don't really hold them.

I suppose I'll just have to join here as well. I think I have an addiction... :-/ thankfully I have buyers for anything I hatch that we can't keep. I picked up a dozen lavender Orpington eggs from some gorgeous parents. They're local so I'm hoping to get at least a few out of them!

Sure the more the merrier! Almost everyone here is addicted, so don't feel lonely. When is your hatch due?

I'll be setting them tomorrow so the 5th or 6th? Also have another 8 trader joes and 11 barnyard mix due on the 3rd. I have two incubators ready to go for hatching since I have them quite staggered!
