November Hatch-A-Long (2014)

Haven't seen a December hatch a long thread yet so was just wondering if anyone will be hatching in december. I am in the process of getting everything situated to do my first hatch ever. My neighbor and I already share 4 chickens that live in my backyard. We've had them since April. We had 5 but one died in September so we knew we were going to replace her but we will also be adding a few more girls to our flock. Any roos that we get we will have them for dinner. My neighbor has a friend who is going to lend us an incubator, I have no idea what kind it is. I have located some local eggs, the breeder has silver laced Wyandottes and I want one so bad! They also have other breeds to so we will get a few different kinds. I will be getting a dozen eggs but not sure how many slw I will ask for. I would be sad if I didn't get at least 1 hen out of the slw eggs. Anyway I am planning to set the eggs on November 21st with a hatch date of December 12th I believe. I am so excited and nervous. I still have no decided what will be the best place to situate the incubator in my home and I'm still debating with I am going to leave the eggs upright or lay them down during incubation. So many decisions! Anyway id love to see a December thread started but didn't want to start it myself since I'm a newbie! I've been following along with this one and I've been so excited for you all and disappointed for some!

Congrats on your first hatch to be :) I asked this same thing awhile ago and never got an answer lol I'm definitely going to be hatching in December. I have 33+ eggs on order that should be here anytime in the next few weeks. I love SLW too. Right now I'm sticking to bantams though. I love the tiny size with HUGE personalities! Oh and welcome to the madness

I had to put Mutt Mutt down today. Had his yolk sack rupture last night. It was just pouring out of a hole that developed between his navel and his leg. Very sad today.

awesome! 33+ eggs! Wow, I'm not sure I could handle that many. I figure a dozen is a good place to start. I will be happy if I hatch at least 1 but hopefully we get more than that. I've been doing tons of research so I feel I'm decently prepared and I know if I have questions along the way I have very experienced people here to ask. We don't have any bantys... I like that I don't really have to worry about my standard sizes flying away... since they started laying eggs I don't think I've even seen any of my girls even try. Hopefully we can get another easter egger too. We love our mint green egg that our Snowball lays! Can't wait to get started next week! :)

Hatching is addicting. And I adore my birds. So I just keep filling my incubators.

I tried hatching easter egger banties but the eggs got pretty scrambled in shipping. Not one developed. I will cross my fingers that you end up with one though :) I did have to clip my Barred Rock hens wings twice when they first figured out how to fly and roost on our fence. After the 2nd round they gave up and happily hang out in the yard. I have silkies other than that so no worries about them flying away lol. How cool to get a mint green egg! My hens lay brown eggs, which is fine with me, but I do love looking at all the colors some people get. I really like the bright blue ones too.

I haven't even got started yet but I can see how addicting it can be. I am sure it won't be my only time but I doubt I will do it on a big scale. I'm not brave enough to try shipped eggs yet which is why I found some local eggs that are only $10 a dozen. We clipped our girls left wings only 1 time and since then they have not even cared to try. They have it good here so I can't imagine why they'd want to leave anyway! Do silkies not really fly? I have no idea, I'm not familiar with silkies. I was excited to find out we had an easter egger because we got them from the feed store and we were told she was something else. So it was definitely exciting waiting to see what color egg shed give us and when it was mint green that was even more exciting because my favorite color is green. I would love a bright blue egg too though. Our other 3 lay brown variations. We have a australorp who lays a very light brown, sometimes it even looks pinkish. And our NH and BR lay a medium brown and some days I have a hard time telling them apart although my BR usually lays a bigger size. I love having a variety of colors but to me an egg is an egg so whatever we have is fine with me. Yay, I just told my neighbor to get the incubator sometime this week so I can check it out and figure out how to use it and set it up and see how steady it keeps temp and humidity. I also just requested the eggs from the breeder.... 6 slw, 3 easter eggers and 3 white egg layers( he said he had them although he didn't say what breed they are)!! I am so excited that this is all happening. Hopefully I can keep myself busy for the next 9-10 days so I won't be too focused on incubating to where the time will drag!!

I could get any standard breed around here. I'd just have to hatch a few barnyard mixes until I got the ones I was looking for lol I fell in love with silkies though. I can get the standard colors in the area but for the unusual ones I have to order them. I'm going for one of every color silkie. They're absolutely adorable and sweet as can be. Or at least the 2 I have are snuggly balls of fluff. Yes they really can't fly. Their feathers resemble fur. One of their many quirks :) You'll keep yourself busy until you get the eggs set and then you'll need to keep yourself busy for the 21 days of incubations LOL I've got 5 silkies due to hatch today, 1 is already out and the others show no signs yet so I'm staring into the incubator every 10 seconds it seems like. And I've got 5 RIR mixes in there as well but they're not due to hatch for 2 more days. I'm still watching for early pips of course :D Well I'm excited for you! I think everyone should have chickens and get to experience the fun of hatching their own at least once.

Just find an area where the temperature is fairly stable.
