November Hatch-a-long...

Here's the first to hatch, 2 are out now!

8 of the 10 eggs made it to lock down. I'm pretty confident about 3-4 of the eggs but I'm new at this so I definitely could be wrong, and I know I shouldn't count my chickens before they hatch lol. The one that we threw out today looked like it quite day 7 or so. Way more made it this far than I thought. So excited for my first chicks!

Well, I'm gutted - out of my 11 eggs that went into lockdown I only have three healthy chicks, and one that isnt looking too good. I had two that must have died at day 18, but the rest died after pipping.

I am never using this incubator to hatch anything ever again - this much loss is depressing.
I can’t remember I feel like you picked eggs up but maybe they weren’t yours? Where did the eggs come from?
So sorry... late losses are the WORST of all.

Firing up the hatcher today, lockdown for one of my eggs tonight. Another egg goes to lockdown in two days. Then I’ve got three more that are developing and due next week. It looks like my boy doesn’t even come close to “contact” with most of the girls he mounts. Just one regularly and about half the time on another.

makes sense with only 5/20 set eggs developing. Still exciting for my first hatched eggs from my own flock.

I did pick up my eggs from a local breeder, so they had white-gloves-treatment for the short ride back to my home. I have purchased from her before and had MUCH better hatch rates (80-95% of what made it to lockdown), but that was using the Nurture Right 360 for the entire hatch. I think the bator I purchased to use as a hatcher is defective, hence why it will be getting returned.

So sorry what a bummer.

Its day 20 for me today. I had two external pips last night aroung 8:00-8:30. Both were at the lowest point for the air cell so that was good. I saw all 8 of the eggs that made it to lock down rocking at some point yesterday. Is it too early for it to external pip? I have read that that means my temperature is too high, but what can happen because of that? And is it likely that the two that externally pipped will hatch today? Thank you for answering my newbie questions

Exciting!!!

it can mean temps are high but that’s not too early. 21 days is an average. Certain lines of birds may hatch early or later in general, and a hatch from day 19-23 can still be totally normal!

Yes, they should hatch today. They can rest for 24 hours after the external pip, so don’t worry too much, this is the hardest part!!!

Well we had some chaos here and did not get duck coop area extended as soon as hoped so that I could get last months “babies”, 17 chicks, out to the new coop brooder area. So I did as suggested and YUP!, my 7 older gals were in shock at 17 new roommates and didn’t bother them not one bit! Now to finish the duck expansion so this months 15 ducklings can go out in a few weeks.

I left the only duck from last month’s hatch (5 weeks) in the mudroom brooder and added the 15 ducklings from a week ago in with her. I think she (he) is in love lol. She is a pretty attentive 5 week old mama lmao
