November Hatch-a-long...

Pics
I just candled my eggs and they look amazing! I can see the chicks and the air cells look great. I had to move my incubator into the bedroom on my night stand because the room it was in isn't the warmest so it was affecting the incubator.

I should have chicks next Saturday.

Uh, quick question: has anyone here dropped an egg while candling (day 5), cracked the shell, but not the membrane, and had it survive?

I have heard of people fixing cracks with candle wax, but I'm fresh out of that, so my horse-show brain took over and I taped the crack with electrical tape. My biggest concern is that the air-sack doubled in size, so I have the egg sitting upright on the center of the turner so it won't roll.
Oh no, so sorry! Dropping an egg candling is the worst.

I’ve never personally had a cracked egg make it but it CAN be done. Yes, most successes I see are wax based, but I’ve seen some tape work, too. Just watch it closely, do you have a way to candle it without removing it? I would be sniff testing and/or candling that egg daily.

I ended up with 6 quail chicks. All of my duck and chicken eggs were stone cold. My heater broke and I was too late to do anything about it. I am very happy with my quail but I wanted ducks real bad. I was so looking forward to ducklings...Maybe next year I can get a new incubator at some point or buy some chicks in the spring.

Well, I'm gutted - out of my 11 eggs that went into lockdown I only have three healthy chicks, and one that isnt looking too good. I had two that must have died at day 18, but the rest died after pipping. I am never using this incubator to hatch anything ever again - this much loss is depressing.

Sorry. It's very disappointing after all that time waiting and then nothing or almost nothing. All that time and investment.

My incubator is in the garbage. I am going to buy chicks or pullets next time. It's far cheaper and they usually survive if the brooder is warm enough. The only thing here is not many people sell them here. Mostly just the tractor supply place. I never buy full grown because you never know what you're really getting. Might be an old hen that is done laying.
