November Hatch -- Who's going to have late fall babies?

With quail eggs it's really easy to spot the clears. They are very light when candled. If fertile they will have a red hue to the inside. I always wait 7 to 10 days before I bother with candling quail unless they are Bob Whites. You can see the veins in them.

The light won't pass through my heavily spotted eggs, though...

I would do what your doing then. Wait to see what hatches. lol

OK, so I went ahead and tried candling again. It was now or never since it's lockdown time!

I quickly checked, pulling out those I thought were no good and setting them aside to triple check. The ones I pulled out looked the same as they did 3 days ago.

From 20 eggs started (5 of mine--Mr. Roo not doing his job much, though + 15 shipped eggs)

I have

9 shipped eggs with development, nice sized air pockets (one is smaller than I'd like)
1 of my own eggs with development, nice sized air pocket

2 eggs that I'm pretty sure are not developed or are early quitters. However, these weren't as obvious as the others, so I tucked them back in at the last minute. I seriously doubt either of these is any good. If they ARE alive then they are substantially behind the others in development or the eggshell is hampering my light differently than the others.

So, probably 10 left as possible hatchers -- of the shipped eggs, that's a 60% rate (and a woeful 20% rate of my eggs, but I knew that was probable.)

Shudder. One egg was clearly "scrambled" inside the shell. I'm glad it didn't blow up...

Just inexperience with candling. I tried again (last post). I'd set to one side of the incubator the eggs I was pretty sure were clear last time I tried. I just didn't want to trust myself. They were still clear now, though, so I trust myself on those.

There were a couple that I wasn't sure about. Left those in...

I am soooo disappointed. I spent sooo much money on all the eggs in the incubators above. I could have bought a TON of day olds at this rate. The incubatorrs ARE maintaining exact temp of 99.5 and 50% humidity. (I am using four different thermometers) This is what I ordered and all were quickly shipped and arrived fine. I let them set for 8 hours before incubating so the aircell could set. Is this normal for shipped eggs? or WHAT AM I DOING WRONG??? besides spending so much.

$35.00 14-Blue Jersey Giants shipped from Florida- 6 going strong
$57.00 24-Silkies shipped from TN- 6 still going 4 late quitters *seller did agree to replace over a dozen FOC
$14.00 20-Pure Mix shipped from MS- 8 going strong
$28.00 6-Turkeys shipped from Upstate NY- 5 going strong
$23.00 20 Quail shipped from Florida- can't tell
$25.00 8 Runner Ducks from NJ- 8 going strong
$11.00 10 Runner Ducks from SC- 9 going strong
$15.00 6 Ring Neck Pheasant shipped from LA- can't tell
$13.50 12 Brahmas shipped from Florida- 6 in lock down

Everything is due to hatch this week except the runners & turkeys.

It seems majority woudn't even start, and then they are dropping off quick. The Turkeys and the runners were only set on the 4th so time will tell with them.
I had figured on 50% hatching...
PLEASE HELP any advise would be appreciated.

They should rest 12-24 hours before you set them. Maybe that is what went wrong.

I have another 13 eggs that were set last week and due towards the end of the month, under my Barred Cochin broody...who is also the MOM of the RIR/Cochin broody up above. Guess it really IS hereditary.

LOL - I have become obsessed with reading these posts!!
I am so excited about the possibility of babies :) Lola is still sitting tight & I have no idea how many eggs are underneath her. She is a fairly small hen & she is keeping them all covered. She is inside of the barn cat's igloo which only has a little cat pad inside of it - no straw or shavings. I am tempted to try to stuff some around the corners, but I don't think I want to risk upsetting her, so I won't.

Those adorable pictures of your new chicks are making me crazy - I want some sooo badly

I like the photo of the broody hen too - she has the exact same expression on her face as Lola!
