Now I have more to worry about besides feral cats..coyotes.

Check the laws, but most states allow you to shoot coyotes anytime. Yes, coyotes are smart if you only have one dog they will send in a member or two of the pack to lure the dog away then kill the livestock, or kill the dog. 2 or 3 dogs are always best with them, or the donkey, the donkey won't leave the flock. Also lights. We put lights up around all our pens, yeah the energy bill sucked, but we didn't lose anything to coyotes.

If you hear them howling alot at night, you might want to sit outside near you pens with anykind of firearm (paintball, bb, real bullets) and try and get some warning shots in. They are very crafty and hard to get a good shot at. My husband shot one, very dark, and the coyote was right at the edge of the light. There was lots of blood, but either it got away or the rest of the pack took it, they will eat their dead.

Good luck.

It's too bad you live elsewhere, I'd be more than willing to hunt coyotes for you if I could get there. I'm so sorry to hear about your loss, he was a gorgeous boy. I hope somebody nearer by can help you out!

Not to make light of the situation, but I've always wanted llamas. If we end up with predators getting closer I might actually talk DH into it!

Oh, the loathing I have for coyotes....

Here in So Cal, we've actually had two coyote attacks (seperate places) on children in broad daylight. Very unsettling. Needless to say, lots of guys with guns. Hopefully it will deter the population a bit.

We've lost many cats to coyotes in the past 5 years or so. We never had a problem before, but they started building houses up in the hills and coyotes are losing they're hunting ranges. On top of that, domestic cats and chickens are easier to catch than rabbits. My mom actually caught a coyote in the act of trying to kill her big pekin duck, in her (fenced) back yard. She scared it off, but she said that it climbed right back over the chain link fence like it was not even there.

The duck is fine... puncture wounds in her head and neck, but $500 vet bills and lots of stitches, and she was all set. She got the nickname "Frankin-Ducky" and got to live in the house for a month.

So far, the only solution (without getting more dogs, and a gun) my mom has come up with is to lock up the ducks in an enclosed chainlink dog run every evening. So far, that's been effective.

I have been living in coyote country for 18 years. Shooting them, trapping them, poisoning them... DOES NOT work! If theres one, believe me there are a lot more. You will never shoot all of them, my friends & neighbors have tried LOL! Get a German Shepherd or keep the birds penned up at all times. Don't even let them out while you are watching them. Because they are watching you. That is how I lost my first 2 chickens. The coyote grabbed one right in front of me, then I was stupid enough to let the chickens out again and the coyote got another one! The only dogs that ever get attacked by coyotes are either old, small or stupid. Get a german shepherd.

Coyotes kill full size hunting hounds. Going to do the same to a GS.

The coyote hounds here people use to hunt are big and nasty.

Eastern coyotes are bigger than it's western counterpart.
