now i've got another problem

Dont shoot the cat...
Take it to a shelter if you cant keep it.
Also..dont jump to conclusions..it may not have killed the bird...Good luck!

Heheheh.. not only is it illegal it is inhumane. If you have a nuisance animal you call animal control or humane society. Unless that animal is threatening your safety or that of a loved one. So if you must kill a cat you have to say the following before firing the weapon "it's coming right for us!".. then shoot and you are covered under the law.

(clears throat) you looking for someone to rub out a couple cats? LOL! I just had to say that. Heard it on Seinfeld when Elaine wanted to get rid of that dog that kept barking at night.

I don't think it was the cat I have 7 and only one went after my girls and only just to chase he loved to stalk and chase but thats it he soon go tired of it and he's about 12 pounds a big strong cat, he also came in one day with one eye shut I think one of the girls got him back with a good peck, I wouldn't kill it,you said it was a small cat so I doubt it,keep the cat they kill mice and the chickens love them..Good luck JIM

Based on your description, I would have to agree it was more likely a raccoon than the cat. It sounds like the cat is already someone's pet, or is wanting to be your pet. Chicken coops usually attract mice/rats and a cat that will hang out around your coop will quickly earn their keep in dead rodents.

Please don't kill a kitty that is so sweet it rolls over in the trap for pets. I have several feral cats, and yes they sit outside the coop and LOVE to watch the chickens. Never, not once, have they even attempted to go for a full grown chicken. They are hungry and they are full grown. They are wild as march hairs, but NEVER try for chickens. I call my run......kitty TV. Cats will not attempt to kill something that may hurt them in the attempt. Think about it....why go for a chichen that might hurt you badly in the attempt? It isn't worth it to them; but cats are curious and they can't help but look and dream. Just like me when I see those brand new camaros. I look, I drool...oh I WANT it, but I can't afford it, it would financially ruin me, so I don't get one....I just look!

I agree I dont think it was a cat tho Ive yet to have coon problems*knocks on wood* I recently discovered what I think is a faro cat. He/she is tiger stripped and from the looks no baby. When it sees Me it runs and hides and has yet to bother any of the boys or girls. Ive got 4 small guineas about 4 months old and the cat hasnt touched them either. I just leave it alone but wish I knew where it slept so I could at least feed it:D

From the way you described how your silkie died it was definitely a raccoon. I've lost too many ducks and chickens like that. As for the kitty, keep him/her. I have a lot of outside/barn cats and I have one that will climb the run and get in with the girls, but he doesn't harm a feather on them. I even have 2 stray cats (I think someone dumped them and one is pregnant), The female comes into the house and the male either goes out into the machine shed or runs across the road into the corn field when he sees us. He's a beautiful long-haired white tom. So Keep the kitty.

I am certain that cats can and do kill chickens. Maybe not every cat will, and certainly not every chicken is at risk. But cats can kill chickens. Especially chicks, bantams, and oblivious birds like silkies.

However, it seems unlikely that it was a cat that killed your silkie, they usually don't remove heads but instead go for the soft or meaty parts like bellies & legs.

You're under no obligation to keep this cat you trapped, even if it is friendly or attractive. Contact your county's animal control department and find out their policy on found cats. It could be someone's lost microchipped pet and they can reunite them. Continue to keep the trap set & baited each night, perhaps try some sweet bait that won't attract more cats.
