Now River Otter's Genetics 101

Pics
Hahahaa! I just have a LOT of animals. And thank you, I try to take really good care of them.

And Sunni gets that reaction a lot, but she's a German Shepherd. With weird color genetics :lau Ok, so, she has a reverse mask, which is not terribly uncommon, the original Rin Tin Tin from the very old TV show was the most famous reverse-mask GSD. And then, when you breed GSDs, the rule is to breed in a sable or bi-color every other generation, because the ones that look like Rin Tin Tin (called saddle backed) are born black, but have a fading gene. If you don't continually breed in dogs that don't' have it, you get too many copies of the fading gene and the dog just ...keeps...fading, which gives a "bright" colored dog, which used to be specifically described as disallowed in the standard, but now isn't (if you get an old breed book from the 80s, you'll find her color perfectly described, and disqualified from the show ring)

Sunni's 3 generation pedigree doesn't have a single dark/non-fading dog in it, and half the pups in her litter were "bright" Check out her 5 month puppy pic vs her at 5 yearsView attachment 3256547

Maybe I subconsciously collect them because I have such a fascination with genetics
Whoa! Amazing how the saddle completely faded!

Does Sunni go back to Rin Tin Tin at all or you can’t tell with only 3 generations I guess? I’d be curious if she did. Is she AKC?

You can't tell, but probably not, there are a LOT of GSDs in the world. I just use that as an example of a saddle-back with a reverse mask because you can google and a million pics come up.

And neither her breeder nor I registered her. She has a littermate who is a show champ, but I got her down in puppy mill country, and her breeder fielded one too many phone calls from folks offering to buy every female in the litter so long as they were registered, so she decided to only register the 2 pups that were going to show homes. She asked me if I minded and I said Nope!! Because I'm pretty firmly anti-AKC, which is a rant for a whole 'nother thread. I ended up with the only girl sold from that litter, the breeder was so disgusted with people she just kept the other 2 girls.

Ahh okay that makes sense

No, I don't, although I'd LOVE a litter from Sunni and got her health tested, hips, heart, elbows, eyes, DM. But I can't find a male who's also tested, who's owner is willing to breed. Either they don't test, or they feel I'm trying to steal their genetics because I wouldn't register puppies with the AKC??? Which is weird, and part of the weird culture the AKC has cultivated.

Why wouldn't you register with AKC? What do you mean weird culture?

I have a male GSD who's father is white and mother black and some tan and a bit of grey.
His color as an adult is similar to the adult dog.

As far as that dog in the picture?
I don't want to sound like a snob .I just think he's of poor quality; bad genetics. I'm sure he's a great dog but by the time those young pictures were taken ,you should be able see proper structure and I'm sorry that dog doesn't exhibit proper structure.

Doesn't stop him from being a great pet
