Now that's an ugly molt!

Poor little Butter led the way for Fall molting. By the time she finished, she was looking pretty rough. On the plus side, I'm sure she's cooler than everybody else and it's been crazy hot here in the 90s for the last couple of weeks so that probably feels good.

The funny thing about molting is, sometimes it's uglier when they DON'T! You should see my Hero (Jersey Giant roo) right now. He's 1 1/2 years old, so this is his 2nd molt. He is a very vain preener, with very lustrous feathers, and he HATES molting, but his tail feathers are his originals, and they are so ratty they look like Winnie the Witch's feather duster! Thank God he's FiNALLY starting to lose them, but if he has to strut around with a naked butt...

(...and he might never drop his drawers again.)

Definitely not their finest moment

Yall think the pin feathers coming through are painful to them? We haven't gone through an adult molt here yet, but I remember when they were chicks they would sort of scream when you handled them and touched the big feathers...ducks especially.

Uugh!! Poor thing.

Only one I've had molt that hard.....as fascinating as it was horrifying.
She actually was quite fine after a day or two of 'isolating'.
Just 5 days later those pin sheathings started shedding.

I find the harder they molt, the faster they get new feathers and look grand again. Once I had a white chicken, and she looked like AArts, and the coop looked like a pillow fight had happened, I first thought something had been killed.
