It was Marek's disease. How do I protect the rest of my flock?

Marek's? It didn't present like Marek's at all, did it? Uh, oh. I think, if I'm not mistaken, that you'd have to vaccinate for it, but that diagnosis surprises me.

I think you'll have to vaccinate every bird from now on with this disease because it's a carrier disease.

Is there a test you can have done on the others? to kinda confirm? Becasue they would be sick or carriers of it - right?
I don't know the signs and symptoms very well...

Ask your vet if he/she can test for it.

Cyn is correct from what I know of it. Also you are to sanitize your coop because it is spread through feather fluff and dander. It can be carried on the wind and infect birds on neighboring farms without having to have made contact by bird to bird.

New birds and new hatchings should be kept away from the older birds until they are 5 months old as well as be vaccinated for the disease.

edited to add - It is not spread through eggs so new hatches won't have a natural immunity.

Why is it weird? Just wondering because I know ziltch about Marek's.
The results, word for word:
"Mophological Diagnosis:
1. Marek's disease
2 Multisystemic Lymphoid neoplasia involving many organs (heart, liver, kidneys, visceral organs, lungs, airsacs).

Other findings:
Mixed flora isolated from liver, spleen, abdominal cavity
No Salmonella sp isolated
Negative SND/AI PCR

The bacterial infection was secondary to the primary neoplasia. No Salmonella sp isolated for this chicken and avian influenza were negative."

Now, I figured she had a bacterial infection based on the fact that her cavity was swollen, red and full of fluid. I am very concerned about the Marek's, though, and I have a call in to my vet to ask about vaccinations.
