After being absent for several days, Number One the Emu turned up, limping miserably, with ten feet of plain fencing wire hobbling her thighs. She was born and raised at the farmhouse, and came in trust, seeking food. The other emus attacked her, and there followed the bizarre scene of me chasing and throwing rocks at my other two emus as they tried to outflank me to kill Number One.
I managed to get close enough, while trust remained, to grab the trailing wire. I was kitted up, with safety glasses on, a hood, et cetera the wire broke. Number One ran off in panic, and sat in an aisle up the gums. I put food and water near here, and left her for hours. Later, I made a hook on the end of a pole: the wire on her legs would have been easy to hook into, then talked to her as I tried to crawl close enough to hook the wire -- bear in mind, readers, that my birds aren't in paddocks.
However, I missed her. She fell down, then jumped off and ran away in complete panic. The wire will by now probably have started chewing through to the bone. I didnt see her today. I can only hope that I see her in the vicinity, and can shoot her before the foxes pull her down as she weakens.
