Numi

Cute pic! So you are adding a new coop for Numi and new birds? All of my babies from last year have declared their sex, except for one white that I’m 90% sure is a cock… He confuses me though because he’s split off with Bruiser and his two girls, forming an unexpected quartet. I expect that neither he nor Bruiser know yet that he’s actually a dude! I could be wrong, could be female but even when separated and communicating with the rest of the flock, I’ve never heard him buckwheat.
I thought I waited for the Buckwheat before declaring genders last year, but Mama is the only one I'm sure has resumed buckwheating so far, after a winter of occasional muttered "cocoa". Mia inherited the "Good Morning" and "For REAL!" - and it was my boys who used to do that - which would totally defy the 2 syllable thing, except they're more of a whistle than a screech. Either way, tugs at my heart to hear it again.
It's their behavior that has me doubting, but then Mama is the most aggressive. They're calm & snuggled inside, but outside they chase & spar like males. Could be d/t absence of a male, but I have a feeling Mia atleast, is a Hea. Lol. She/he reminds me of PJ his 1st spring, doing the side way walk & fake charges, arching wings, chasing Brodie, even trying to sneak up behind me before scurrying off when I turn around. He/she knows his/her name though, so either way, it's Mia. Since all other physical attributes get debunked, I'm sure the ceres thing does as well. Apparently that's what breeders go by in African countries. Either way, she's got a big un. Lol
Yes, after all kinds of cool ideas requiring a lot of work, Himself decided on a large resin yard barn w/windows, vents and sunlights for the new crew mounted on concrete. Will probably add a larger vent to back wall.
I've been stocking up on 100' rolls of 1/4" hardcloth over the winter, moving the raised beds back there and plan to enclose all of it so I know they're safe when I'm not around.
It's all out there waiting for the weather to improve. He found someone who takes apart lg. equipment shipping boxes and makes fencing frames out of them, so we have a supply of those stocked up now.
He did such an awesome job on 1st coop that it'll probably outlive both of us, but Mama is so territorial over it that if Numi even hops up on the porch she goes after her. She was never accepting of incubated keets, so we just didn't see trying to integrate- esp since we don't want cross mating.
Numi is a hoot to live with. She interjects herself into conversations: Himself was disputing "facts" relayed by me from one of our kids, saying "that's not how it went", & suddenly Numi pipes in w/the stranger danger shrill as though telling him THAT'S EXACTLY what we were told! I think she either likes his voice or just recognizes that it belongs here but isn't always, bc she always has something to say to him.
Most of the time it's like having any other bird inside, quiet chattering and whistles. She loves her toys, so will have to figure out how to incorporate toys into new coop. Still demands cuddle time at night; still stays close when we're outside but venturing further on her own. She gets closer to where the big birds are, but quickly runs back to hide under back steps or in my lap when Mama turns on her. She has foraging down pat and learning to keep an eye on the sky.

We totally need some pics of Numi the House Guinea! And yeah, Mia sure sounds like a dude…:gigNot sure what to make of their vocalizations as bird calls don’t really sound like human words to me. Do you have any videos with sound?

Not of this crew, but you've seen this one of Blue. I think he got 1 good morning in there but mostly for real. Mama would never be quiet long enough to let anyone else go solo. To me, it's a whistle, and the "words" are just the sound tone changes, not actual letters..ie For REEal good MORNing. I don't know if that makes sense or not..the cadence or inflection of sounds..it takes me back to elementary school music class & Mrs. Ireland having us clap our hands in time with saying "TEE te te ta ta ta". Lol

As for more pics, here she is this a.m. in playpen sunning herself. 20220312_124200.jpg
the majority of changes right now are as her head cap comes in and bone structure changes in her head/face..ie bone structure around and above eye is becoming more prominent - and the changing skin colors on wattles and neck. I think her eyes are more bluish gray now than the blue they were. 20220311_175957.jpg

Sweet!:love

What a gorgeous day! 17° to 56° in 24°. And it's what we all needed to shake out our tail feathers & brag about our gender qualities!
I think Numi was amazed. Her 1st experience of warm weather, sunshine, blue sky and no snow on ground all at once. I was able to get some pics of her that seemed to show her taking it all in.
So- @african chickens you referred to "French Guineas" - @R2elk , Is this correct regarding french hybrids? its from guinea farm site - "When fully grown, jumbo guineas are the same color as pearl gray guineas, only larger, weighing 5 to 7 pounds. They're large like the French Hybrids, but will mate naturally and do not have to be artificially inseminated to get fertility" ?
If so, @african chickens - mine def are not "french", just jumbos - no problems mating what so ever.
That said, The 1st 2 pics are of Brodie. Brodie is the wild child. Almost 8 months old,and today is the first day HE has willingly come near me. YES- HE. Everyone decided today was the day to make this abundantly clear. And there will be a wall dividing them from Numi and the newbies. 20220313_144826.jpg 20220313_144930.jpg
He's checking himself out in truck reflection here.

Phew, excuse the mess behind them, that's the new coop.ok..Mia the He-a is closest to camera. Mia is a little over 8 months old.
The one in the middle is Brodie, and his Mama next to him. Glad they all cleared that up for me today. 🤦‍♀️

Here's to a happier season than the last!

That Numi is a cutie! Mia is the one on the far left of the trio? Mia really looks like a cock!:pop
That's what I started thinking, but I could have sworn the darn thing started buckwheating after the killing fields. Same w/Brodie. Mia was the one that stepped in to be Nanny to Mama's brood.
But yes, out in the sunshine yesterday they started being males. Lol. Mama has been charging at Numi when she sees her. Yesterday Numi decided she'd had enough of it. I have video of her plowing through the 3 jumbos. I don't think I caught the part when Mama charged and at the last second Numi "haha I have wings!" hopped up in the air and flapped in Mama's face. Lol.

Progress cont. On Numi's Cottage. I've got ground cover cut and ready to go over windows, hemp being delivered tomorrow, and Himself is making roost tomorrow bc he never lets me have any fun with power tools. Lol.
Numi likes to go outside and hang out on the porch when it's raining. Today she pecked on the door and when I opened it,she walked in and hopped in her box. Starting to wonder how she'll take the move! #OneSmartBird.
