I thought I waited for the Buckwheat before declaring genders last year, but Mama is the only one I'm sure has resumed buckwheating so far, after a winter of occasional muttered "cocoa". Mia inherited the "Good Morning" and "For REAL!" - and it was my boys who used to do that - which would totally defy the 2 syllable thing, except they're more of a whistle than a screech. Either way, tugs at my heart to hear it again.Cute pic! So you are adding a new coop for Numi and new birds? All of my babies from last year have declared their sex, except for one white that I’m 90% sure is a cock… He confuses me though because he’s split off with Bruiser and his two girls, forming an unexpected quartet. I expect that neither he nor Bruiser know yet that he’s actually a dude! I could be wrong, could be female but even when separated and communicating with the rest of the flock, I’ve never heard him buckwheat.
It's their behavior that has me doubting, but then Mama is the most aggressive. They're calm & snuggled inside, but outside they chase & spar like males. Could be d/t absence of a male, but I have a feeling Mia atleast, is a Hea. Lol. She/he reminds me of PJ his 1st spring, doing the side way walk & fake charges, arching wings, chasing Brodie, even trying to sneak up behind me before scurrying off when I turn around. He/she knows his/her name though, so either way, it's Mia. Since all other physical attributes get debunked, I'm sure the ceres thing does as well. Apparently that's what breeders go by in African countries. Either way, she's got a big un. Lol
Yes, after all kinds of cool ideas requiring a lot of work, Himself decided on a large resin yard barn w/windows, vents and sunlights for the new crew mounted on concrete. Will probably add a larger vent to back wall.
I've been stocking up on 100' rolls of 1/4" hardcloth over the winter, moving the raised beds back there and plan to enclose all of it so I know they're safe when I'm not around.
It's all out there waiting for the weather to improve. He found someone who takes apart lg. equipment shipping boxes and makes fencing frames out of them, so we have a supply of those stocked up now.
He did such an awesome job on 1st coop that it'll probably outlive both of us, but Mama is so territorial over it that if Numi even hops up on the porch she goes after her. She was never accepting of incubated keets, so we just didn't see trying to integrate- esp since we don't want cross mating.
Numi is a hoot to live with. She interjects herself into conversations: Himself was disputing "facts" relayed by me from one of our kids, saying "that's not how it went", & suddenly Numi pipes in w/the stranger danger shrill as though telling him THAT'S EXACTLY what we were told! I think she either likes his voice or just recognizes that it belongs here but isn't always, bc she always has something to say to him.
Most of the time it's like having any other bird inside, quiet chattering and whistles. She loves her toys, so will have to figure out how to incorporate toys into new coop. Still demands cuddle time at night; still stays close when we're outside but venturing further on her own. She gets closer to where the big birds are, but quickly runs back to hide under back steps or in my lap when Mama turns on her. She has foraging down pat and learning to keep an eye on the sky.
