NY chicken lover!!!!

My Henny Hens: I am contemplating Barnevelders to add a dark color to my egg carton. (And I live not too far from Barneveld NY). How dark are the eggs that you are getting from them? Do they seem to tolerate the CNY heat and cold well? How big are the eggs that they lay? Are they freindly?
I thank you for any information you can give me.

This is a goal for next year (the dark eggs). This year I have the easter eggers from Megan to add some greens and more blues (hopefully).
I have more questions....are they significally different(the eggs) from marans' eggs? How good is the lay rate?

I set 13 eggs for the Mother's day hatch and they are all infertile.I have been watching behaviors in the pen for clues.....well 1 buckeye, seems attractive to the rooster, but when he tries to breed her she runs quick, turns around and crashes into him with her chest! He on the other hand is being a gentleman about it. He does not persist. He just kind of looks around as if to say....."Who me?" The older buckeye hen just doesn't seem attractive to the rooster. I have trimmed up the female butts(but[no pun intended] think I should trim the roosters hind end also). Oh well. It is always something.......

Well my broody hatched 3 of 4. The 4th piped, but the chicks must have decided to leave the nest and so did momma. Piped but dead in the shell. Not to bad for a first time broody. I go into the coop and look in her pen and see nothing but a big old poof of hen.

happy - I can't say enough about the Barnevelders! They are just wonderful! My head rooster is a barnie and he is the best (he's my avatar)!

I have 3 little kids and he doesn't bother any of them. In fact, he eats out of their hands! The hens are sweet, docile birds. They are beautiful to boot! I have had them for 3 years now and have not had any trouble with them tolerating any weather. They lay a nice size egg (larger than the store "large"), but not as big as my comets or my MIL's barred rocks (some of hers look like duck eggs!). The egg color is darker than my other brown layers, except my Maran (maran eggs are darker). They tend to be speckly too. I know what you mean about the egg basket. I have the Maran and EE for the egg basket! The barnies are good for both my eye candy as well as the egg basket!

When you are ready, let me know!!! Good luck with your green/blue eggs!

the maran eggs are darker - more like a chocolate bar. The barnie eggs are not as dark and are sometimes speckled, but darker than the comets, cochins, RIR in my coop. I'm getting 5+/- eggs per week from my birds (per bird).

I just dropped in to say, I have a BR that is broody. She is determined and has plucked her feathers. If I can move her and she hatches chicks, is there someone here who will take them? Free. I am just to overwhelmed with chicks right now to deal with anymore. You must present your BYC ID card. No guaratees what she'll hatch or if she'll make a good mother. It's her first time and she just started laying this late winter. But you must take all but one chick.

Don't have one? Well Mods, we should. I got one when I joined the Felix the Cat club. In fact there should be a BYC member packet with a bumper sticker and a badge and ID card.

Join the club!! I keep eyeing my easter chicks to see if they are feathered enough to take to auction yet. I just have too many and my neighbor who wanted some of them is incommunicado. :p I can see at least 6 boys, hoping I can pick out at least 10 to go to schuylerville. My broodies hatched out 13 more, plus I have a possible broody in the woods who may or may not show up with chicks in a few days.

My official count is four new additions out of five fertile eggs. The Leghorn egg still hadn't pipped this morning, so I pulled it and cracked it to see what had happened. The chick was dead - going by its level of development (I knew drawing all those preserved chicks in developmental biology/embryology was good for something) and the visible yolk sac, it quit over a week ago. Too bad, as it was shaping up to be a nice, big chick. Such is life in Chicken World, though. There's another one incubating under my BLRW - I'll have that cross yet!

The chicks are hilarious, and my ditzy little BO is proving to be a good mom. She lets them climb all over her like she's a playground, and is now showing them how to eat and drink. The would-be kidnap victim is none the worse for wear, and is probably the biggest and most active of all.
