NY chicken lover!!!!

All this talk of NPIP! I just today was tested and certified NPIP. I was on the fence for a while, but decided to do it as I sell chicks and hatching eggs. I have to say, I'm THRILLED that I have a clean flock (as if I ever had a concern)

The technician also "patted my back" telling me my birds were really healthy, good looking birds. That is always nice to hear! SO HAPPY!

My chicken coop came today! My husband helped me put it together tonight and then he went out to buy some stuff so we can weather proof it. It's from CCONLY.com and yes I definitely got what I paid for but I like it so far. You can definitely tell the quality of the wood is poor but I knew I would have to do my own tweaking with it to get it to last. I can wait to get the chicks in it tomorrow. I was so excited as I drove up here this afternoon to see the temp go up and up and up to about 74 degrees when I finally arrived! I'll take some pics when it's completed and the chicks are living in it.

Congrats!!! Now I know where to get eggs if I need them. LOL

The Leghorn egg remains unpipped, dang it. I'm going to give it one more day, and then I'll pull it and crack it open to see what happened. I'm now suspecting a quitter. Four chicks out of five eggs for a first-time broody isn't half-bad, though. The four kids are all happy and active, even the one who was the victim of the kidnap attempt. I've discovered that she (I have decided they're all pullets - yeah, RIGHT - as if - more like all roos with my luck) does have a red spot on her back where she lost fluff when the accursed Sussex nabbed her, but the skin isn't broken, and she's busily climbing all over Mama with the other three, so things are good. Stupid mama-wannabe. I suspect things will be different with Daphne the BLRW, as she's a big, dominant girl who will smack down a rooster if needed, never mind other hens. This little BO is fairly low in the hierarchy, and the SS is pretty high-ranking, so the rotten speckled wench probably figured she could steal those babies for herself with no problem. Sorry, sorry, so sorry, but nope. Homey don't play 'dat.

I brought home a vial box from work to use as a nest box and set the little family's temporary quarters up better. There is now a decent-sized space for the hen to move around, and the feed and water aren't right in front of the nest box. I'll set up a bigger pen for them this weekend when I'm off. I think I'll get another one of those dog play yards from TSC, as I love those.

A friend of a friend had 27 eggs under one hen and claimed her fertility rates/hatch rates were really low...only had 9 hatch. DUH!!! How about putting 10 eggs under the hen next time, probably wind up with more chicks that way. I got eggs from her and ALL 4 of mine hatched. She wanted to know my secret. Hmm....LOL
Twenty-seven eggs?

The poor broody must have looked like she was sitting on some sort of weird, space-age air-cell mattress.

Or had 26 inches of hay/straw to bury the eggs in. You know how we try and use our common sense when dealing with our birds? I think she used THEIR common sense, instead of her own.

My Henny Hens: I am contemplating Barnevelders to add a dark color to my egg carton. (And I live not too far from Barneveld NY). How dark are the eggs that you are getting from them? Do they seem to tolerate the CNY heat and cold well? How big are the eggs that they lay? Are they freindly?
I thank you for any information you can give me.

This is a goal for next year (the dark eggs). This year I have the easter eggers from Megan to add some greens and more blues (hopefully).
