NY chicken lover!!!!

I hope folks know I was kidding about the ID card thing. I'm sure someone will take FREE chicks. I will only give her 6 eggs anyhow. These will be BR's from MO. At least I hope so. There are two SLW hens in there but the roo is a BR.

Rancher, What are SLW? I have Silkies remember. Don't know other
breeds. Tell me. Thanks Aria I press submit and it says please
enter something ...hey I did I am stuck. What do they want me
to enter

happy - I can't say enough about the Barnevelders! They are just wonderful! My head rooster is a barnie and he is the best (he's my avatar)!

I have 3 little kids and he doesn't bother any of them. In fact, he eats out of their hands! The hens are sweet, docile birds. They are beautiful to boot! I have had them for 3 years now and have not had any trouble with them tolerating any weather. They lay a nice size egg (larger than the store "large"), but not as big as my comets or my MIL's barred rocks (some of hers look like duck eggs!). The egg color is darker than my other brown layers, except my Maran (maran eggs are darker). They tend to be speckly too. I know what you mean about the egg basket. I have the Maran and EE for the egg basket! The barnies are good for both my eye candy as well as the egg basket!

When you are ready, let me know!!! Good luck with your green/blue eggs!
Henny Hens: Thank you so much - and by the way, your rooster is sooo pretty. I will definately look into Barnevelders for next year. I really like the spotted eggs. Must be the appaloosa lover in me. :) I cannot have a rooster unless he whispers. Does he whisper? Sadly, owning 70 acres does not mean that you are isolated. We have 3 neighbors very close to the house and coop. Ahh well. So far my egg basket is looking pretty good. We have 1 ameraucana that lays a pretty blue egg, then there are creme ones, brown ones, light brown with speckles and an occasional white. (I don't know why and have not caught the hen laying it. They are all supposed to be brown egg layers.) Sounds like the personality of the Barnevelder is just what I look for in a hen.

If I make typo's, it is because my cat is helping me type until the dog bugs her enough to make her run across the keyboard hissing.

The last few weeks have been nice, the girls were starting to mellow out, probably looking forward to the teenagers moving in with them to extend the pecking order, and each ones own personal status...but seriously it has been nice. This week, it's like all the adults have PMS. They are seriously snarky. Today two of them, that is half, are clucking and puffing and walking around with their wings spread looking like triangles. Then they ruffle up and smooth down their feathers. They could be starting broody madness. Are RIRs supposed to be this broody? They are about a year old.

The teenagers are rushing up to each other and stretching up their necks and glaring at each other. Practicing confrontation? They will need this skill with their elders being so snarky.

Perhaps I should take the tv out to the coop and turn on positive cartoons, like Mr Rogers and the Get Along Gang.

It is not the Peaceable Kingdom out there.

My Henny Hens: I am contemplating Barnevelders to add a dark color to my egg carton. (And I live not too far from Barneveld NY). How dark are the eggs that you are getting from them? Do they seem to tolerate the CNY heat and cold well? How big are the eggs that they lay? Are they freindly?
I thank you for any information you can give me.

This is a goal for next year (the dark eggs). This year I have the easter eggers from Megan to add some greens and more blues (hopefully).
I happen to have 2 Barnie chicks that I NEED to unload

Annie -- I wish I lived closer. I would snap them up in a heart beat!

Ginny-- the chicks are doing great. they are so cute and still small, but about the same as the others their age.

Well I'm off to bed. Night night

Evening all. Been working on the coop with the dh today and got the roof rafters up and some of the inside supports in. Hoping to finish that tomorrow and put the roof on. Then comes the siding. Its looking pretty good. Got to finish soon cause the terrorists need to go in there. Bad. They are getting huge! Dh is complaining that there is dust in his firearms so you know thats bad!

I know its off topic but I would ask that everyone keep my close friend and fellow coworker in your prayers. Her 4 year old son Rylan passed away very unexpectedly at 1232 this morning. He had just been diagnosed with walking pnumonia yesterday and sent home with antibiotics. He died in her arms this morning. We are all stunned and devastated by his death as he was a very sweet, loving, giving child. I guess God needed him more than we did. His mother (who is a single mom raising 2 boys) is beside herself with grief. I am still trying to come to grips with this myself. Thanks.
