NY chicken lover!!!!

Featherz do you happen to know how much Agway charges for a 25lb bag of Chick Starter/Grower? I just went to CountryMax and I have a feeling thats the last time I'll shop there. Very pricey. I just paid $23.75 for a 25lb bag. And of course I go to TS website to see what the difference is in their brands and all the Dumor and Purina 50LB BAGS are only $15/$16 bucks! Should have went there! Owell, live and learn! LOL
I get Agway brand medicated starter/grower at my Cortland CountryMax. Around $15 for a 50# bag. Smaller bags of feed are always more expensive. Store the feed in the bag inside a clean, dry, air-tight container and it should keep. The bags are the plastic coated, so keeps the feed from spoiling as quickly. Of course, mine are going through feed much quicker now and have 19, so I don't worry about spoilage.

Well, crud. I was just out in the coop and found that two of the eggs due this Tuesday have been crushed, leaving two perfectly formed, dead 18-day baby chicks. My hen is a fat butt, so I wouldn't be surprised if she managed to step on them. There were no other eggs in there (the others don't dare go in - she's very dominant), so she's most likely the klutz responsible. The other five eggs have some yolk and goop on them, but I don't dare wash them and remove the bloom, especially not at this point. So, I picked off the nesting material stuck to the other ones, moved them to a new (and lower box), and stuck the broody back in on them, cursing roundly the entire time. We shall see what happens.

Ugh - if she was going to be a clumsy butt she could have done so, oh, I don't know, eighteen days ago or so. *bangs head off the wall*

Morning all. Well, the coop was done enough to put the terrorists in it last night. We put them in around 6 and sat in front of the big screen window watching them. They were very happy in their new digs where they could run and scratch and flap their wings. However, when it got dark, they freaked out like the babies they still are and started peeping rather loudly and were flying/climbing the windows. When dh went to check on them and looked through the window, they all ran to that window as if relieved that someone was there. They finally all piled in the corner by the pop door. When I went out this morning, they were all bebopping around in the coop. I guess the first scary night didnt leave any lasting issues!!! Today the steps go up. I love our new coop. Yes, I will post pics soon. Still lots of little things to get done, like trim and doors on the nesting boxes, etc as well as the run but at least they are out of my house!!! Let the dust cleaning begin!

The tots are still downstairs and I am hoping that my dd and her other half deliver the coop they made me today. I cant wait to see it and put the tots out as well. Broody momma is still sitting on her remaining egg and taking care of the chick. She is a very good momma, even though she trys to destroy my hands every time I am in there changing water and filling the feeder. I would love her sisters to hatch some eggs but Sassy refuses to lay or sit in the coop. Sarah has shown no signs of being broody. I trimmed up cushions yesterday again to increase the fertility rate, I hope.

I hope everyone gets out and enjoys this weather. Looks like the lawn needs mowing again. Have a good day!

Going to be too hot for me today! we're going to the movies. :p

Got a pic of 'elvis' (or whatever he ends up getting named). He's a feisty little guy!

Javagirl, here are a few of your babies along with one of their 'moms'!

Let's see if the movie upload works..

These girls aren't quite as cute as our feathered girls, but they're still cool.

Congratulations! We now have 2 hives. DH caught the swarm and they seem happy and my friend already had a nuc set up for me to have yesterday. So, now we have 2 hives going. Guess we are in it now. Can't wait for honey next year!

I just paid $11 for 50 lbs of starter. Why do stores think they can do that to people? Just because it is a smaller bag does not mean they can double the price. Ugh. Sorry.

I agree, but at the same time, it's my fault and I need to start putting my foot down more often LOL Instead, I sat there at the register and just dealt with the price and paid it. I SHOULD have said "$23 bucks?!? I'm going down the road to TS and getting 50lbs for almost $10 less! Sorry!" I guess having two little monsters tagging along does that to me. Well, now I know to just stick with TS and next time I'll be getting a 50lb bag. Feed shouldn't be that big expense for me anyway, I only have the 5, plan on sticking with just 5 and eventually they will free range. I'm trying to get them to free range now but they're still a bit skiddish when they do take a few steps outside the run. The minute one of us comes up the hill they all run for the coop. LOL This morning my daughter and I went up and threw some bits of bread to them all around the coop/run. So they were outside of it for a bit eating it up. That was funny to watch!
