NY chicken lover!!!!

Good Morning! I haven't been able to keep up recently with this thread - life.

Anyhow, I have a broody hen (second time this season for this hen) and I'm hoping someone out there will have pure bred, fertile hatching eggs for sale I can put under her. My flock is all running together right now so I can't guarantee pure chicks. I'm in Oneida and can come pick them up. PM me if you have some! THANK YOU!

If you would like, i've got splash and golden laced cochins. As well as buff and light brahmas. All bantams though.

We now have 11 broodies and 2 hens with freshly hatched chicks. I'm going to head out to collect eggs and count my birds the best I can. I'll let you know my results.

I so can't wait for the weekend. Work has been dreary and the thought of 2 days away from it is nice.

Ugh. I let my old biddies out for an hour and the fox got one when I was out in the yard.. The others didn't even notice. =( She fought like the dickens tho - the trail of pretty white feathers is looooong. RIP pretty white leghorn. =( I didn't see the fox or the chicken, just the feathers.

My fault, I should not be letting them out, but the old biddy coop has a much smaller run and they are so used to free ranging over the last few years. Was just thinking today how good they were at evading predators. Spoke too soon!

Everyone back on lockdown.. Never got a response from any trapper types, I guess fox are too hard to catch. I'll set up my trap again tomorrow night, but I am sure I'll get a skunk again.

Now see, I posted this thread yesterday and everyone was insisting that my top wire would work without additional grounding if something climbed up the wood walls and touched it. Not true? I had planned to add a second ground wire or maybe a piece of grounded fence behind the top wire, but the folks in my electric fence thread seemed to think the animal would ground through the wood..

Gotta say, I had a chick stuck outside the other day that I could not catch - he walked into the wire with his feet on the ground many times and was definitely not shocked. The feathers help a lot!

Wood does have electrical insulative properties. Not like plastic or glass, which have excellent insulative properties. Wood poles are often used for fencing because it does not conduct electricity very well, however conductivity does change with the water and mineral make up of said wood. I have seen, electricity jump from the wire, to the wood pole during rainy weather, or when things are holding more water. If wood was a total non conductor of electrical current, we would not need to put insulators on wooden poles for our electric wires. It would not hurt to cover the wire with electric tape, in my opinion. Good luck with your new fence! Hopefully that dratted fox will stay clear and get a good ZAP should he try to get in!!!

Well I've counted the best I could adults and youngstock. And the count is....drum role....a total of 237 with more pips right at the moment and 2 of the broodies due in the next few days.

I am surprised myself. I didn't expect that many. Most are young stock though.

I am trying.. =( Even tried hitting up a friend of ours that I know is more trapping oriented, but unable to get him out here to help me. Looks like I can't even let them out supervised! I went into my pullet coop today and OMG do they whine. A solid wall of whine. They are safe in the coop (I hope). Anyone else have a flock that's confined to a run? do they get used to it? Mine have always free ranged with only an occasional hawk loss.
