I killed my 6th this year yesterday....We haven't caught the raccoon yet...much to my dismay!
On a bright note, my 4 broody hens all hatched out chicks, and are in a pen together sharinng them....so cute!
Any genetics whizes here? I had no luck with my Silver laced Wyandotte roosters, all were not fertile, so I decided to play around with my Lavendar Orp rooster. One of the hens hatched out 4 "black" chicks that are half Lav orp & half silver laced Wyandotte. So these chicks are split for lavendar. Do I breed them together, or back to their father? I'm thinking back to their father, but then, when do I inntroduce back the lacinig? This is probably a dead end deal, but I thought, how pretty would a lavendar laced Wyandotte or Orpington be? LOL
Thanks Tabitha. It all started with you! You'll fit right in. As you're coming to realize, chickens are addictive! We call it morehens disease.![]()
Congrats!!!My Blue Sumatra hen simply named Mama just showed me her ELEVEN, yes 11 lil fuzzy butts!![]()
unless you kill what ate your roo, it will be back for more. Keeping true ferrel birds safe is a lot of work. In the last 5 weeks I have killed 6 coons, 1 possum, a skunk (after eggs and chicks) a red fox and my cat killed 2 weasels. Unless they are locked up tight at night you need to expect losses. They do get wiser and learn where is safe and where isn't, but that is after losses. BTW their "coop" really doesn't sound safe. It sounds like they all are sitting ducks at once. Unless you add a door to close. I'll pm you my number if you want to call.Congrats!!!
I wish I still have your phone number. I want to ask you something. My birds (that I got from you) Are roosting on the top of the tall run I have. Usually I put them in their little coop, but decieded last night to leave them be. (Cuz it is stressful for all involved to pluck them off and shove them in their coop) One of them (the ONLY silver roo) got eatten last night by something. I am NOT amused. But what can I do? Am I gonna be stuck plucking each and every one of them down every night or will they wise up sometime before they are all eatten and go in their coop by themselves. (By "coop" I mean a nice little 4' long box on top of a tall stump that is totally open in front and has a small roost in front of it to land on so they can get in it but no roost inside. sigh)
I catch coons, possum and skunks in a box trap from TSC. Well actually 2 box traps. Coons and possum get .22 caliber lead poisoning between the eyes in the trap. Skunks, I cover the trap and either drive them 10 miles from home and release them, or more often release them on my property then practice my shooting skills on a moving target to kill them. The red fox I killed i also used the .22 as she was making a run for my chickens.Featherz - Don't sweat things about CL. Sometimes I'm just to tired to answer back that I'm no longer interested. I check the wording on some and if they're not using proper English I delete them right off.
Stony - I like that broody box. I'm having a devil of a time with my BR's as I've no where to separate them to. I've two girls huddled in a corner on one egg. So I put a milk crate in that corner and they huddle up against the crate.![]()
I'm trying to get some more Del chicks going before winter. I gave away 10 hens this spring and now regret it. I should have hatched more chicks first. I've three hens coming up of my line. I'll be taking most of the ones I ordered to Kings this month. I may keep a few hens but put them in with another roo just so I can have hens for eggs.
Now for those with coons, I've been pretty lucky but I think there is a Skunk skulking around. I smelled it this am. I'm going to make my famous Peanut butter and $%^&^ sandwich, but I have reservations since I have a rabbit that comes around. No fear in this little guy/girl. I'm working in the yard and here it comes hopping by like it's nobody's business. One evening I had two playing tag with the chickens. Even though I put the sandwich in a cage I have had a rabbit get in it once. Fortunately it had rained and sandwich had no ill effect.
How are you'all killing your coons?
