NY chicken lover!!!!

You can put de in with the food and I do but I am not so sure how good it is for worming. I use pour on ivermectin (eprinex) as it is much easier. Just a little squirt under the feathers high on the neck and you are done. No egg withdrawel and it works on everything inside and out. Initially I didnt want to do any kind of worming and didnt for the first year and a half but decided to as a preventative measure because we have so many wild birds and lots of earthworms. It seems to work well with no effects and like I said, I dont have to toss eggs. I have never seen any parasites of any kinds in or on my flock either before I started doing it or after. I think its a personal choice for each flockraiser. I find my girls are a little more efficient and put on a little more weight after having it done so who knows. I would say read everything you can, both pro and con, and make your own decision based on what you are seeing in your flock. I hope this helps.
I like the idea that it will treat inside and out. Can I still use it if I am having the hens lay to hatch some chicks? The animal specialist at my Agway is a total chicken love also, she suggested the DE as a method of worming. I was just wondering if it was little more natural. My flock does need to be wormed, especially before the colder months, so a bird with a little more weight for our brutal winter up up here on the mountain, sounds good.

Please explain this technical term to a noob.

sometimes chickens just lay the egg too soon. They tiny eggs are called fart eggs . The eggs pass through too fast and don't fully develop. They range in size from a large marble to the size of a bantam yolk generally

Are you guys worming?

No, it's so dry here I'm not sure I need to.

Forgot to mention I met two new people to chickens. One couple sold a couple of chicks to. The other was here yesterday to buy hens. Newbies I gave them the BYC address but not sure they joined. Yesterdays couple was older. They're neighbors. Near Marcellus. I have don't have a lot of hens to sell but sold them a couple of 2 years olds that are still laying. I had a third but she got away and there was no way I could chase her. She came back eventually. Anyhow if you live near Marcellus and have some hens for sale they would like more I'm sure. Contact me and I'll give your their number. They aren't computer literate. I'd hate for them to go to an auction.

These are project ameracaunas from Renee in Syracuse. The secret source of my bright blue eggs that occasionally make it into my customers egg carton. They always look to see if their carton has the "prize".

Is Renee still in business? I drove by her place and didn't see any chickens. I was supposed to get some eggs from her but she didn't answer my e-mails nor my phone calls. This after she posted to CL.

4 year old chickens can lay fart eggs. Age doesn't have anything to do with it
Agreed Stony. The hens in question are a little over 2 years old now and it was one of them that laid it. I get them occasionally from one of them, usually one of the small barred rocks. Dont know why, just happens. One of the boys tried to mate with Nellie, my little barred rock hen, last night and boy did he get a wakeup call! She ran under a chair and whomped his head into the crossbar between the legs and knocked him *** over teakettle (pardon the use of a certain word). Dh couldnt stop laughing at him. Nellie may be little but she doesnt put up with crap, especially from randy teenage boys!

Hey Stony (or anyone else for that matter)---whats the earliest you have had a rir pullet or sexlink pullet lay? I have a few who have really red wattles and combs at 16 wks old. Seems like they are growing much faster than what my laying hens did.

Kamir--learning is a lifelong process and with chickens, its a daily thing. Thats why we are all here helping each other and learning from each other because weird stuff happens. Especially with kids and animals!!!
