NY chicken lover!!!!

Well I just got home and driving down the driveway scared out a large hawk from my willow. I tried and thought I hit it with the pellet gun. It flew to a different tree and shook out its wing. So I tried a roman candle and it flew to a tree at the end of my pole barn. Dang thing! Its persistant. This is what probably got my buff brahma bantam a couple weeks ago in broad daylight.

Tab, I don't think I mentioned how much I enjoyed your greens, they were delish, and I know we are all brimming with good health from eating them. Your garden looked awesome, the chickies are lucky to benefit. Greens are kind of a thing that people in the Utica Rome area make aren't they? Here we have salt potatoes for special picnics etc.
Lapeerian, I have gone through times when a hen will lay those leather eggs for a while. Then it kind of seems to clear up. Do you have a separate dish of oyster shell? Mine like to pick through and select the perfect piece.

Tab made the "greens" dish. I loved it!! Was it kale and would you share the recipe?

Ok ...burning?? Ouch ;( PHOTOS!!!! Close up of eyes!!! Id give it a go

Had my daughter take a before photo yesterday...will get another with my hair done Tomorrow and post when we get back.

The burning only lasted a few minutes. Really, it was OK, just unexpected.

Thanks Glass and Ginny about the greens. They were collards and swiss chard. I sauteed onion and garlic in bacon drippings then added cubed ham and diced tomatoes to it and cooked for a minute or 2. Then I added the sliced up greens and covered. When the greens were wilted down some I added canned sweet red pepper that I diced. I tossed it all together a few times as it cooked and let cook until I thought it was cooked down enough. These were my own concoction.

Well we should be up to 5 eggs today from my son's hen "Golden Star" our BOxBlackSexLink mix. They've been kind of small compared to the store bought large white eggs we're used to eating so I've been saving them up since my parents come up today so that we can cook them tomorrow and everyone can try them. I'm still waiting for my lavender orp hen to lay. But then again, I just checked and she won't even be 20 wks until 9/4. She has been squatting in the yard though which leaves me to believe she's almost ready.

Decided to clean up area around the stream that runs down the right hand side of our yard yesterday. Cleared out all the brush and weeds growing and threw some logs down along side where the water runs. Looks so much better, the chickens loved it. Thats where they do most of their drinking from anyway but now it looks a lot nicer rather than muddy puddles that you could barely see before. I'd love to grab some of that tall green grass I see growing everywhere up here and throw that in there, but I'm thinking I may just go to a nursery and get some grasses to keep most of the brush/weeds away.

Went out to lowes last night and bought some wood, locks, brackets to start building my new coop for the silkies. Up to about $100 so far but thats only because I bouught myself a jigsaw to cut all this wood with so I wouldn't be making a million trip back and forth to the store. Can't wait to see how this goes!
You go girl!
I asked my husband if we had a handsaw...I think he got nervous, because he bought me the coops that I originally wanted. Maybe he was afraid I'd cut something off. LOL Someday, I will build something...using power tools.
