NY chicken lover!!!!

Indeed it is true that hawks are protected, but we are allowed to protect our livestock and poultry. We just can't kill them for fun. Also, should I .....hhhmmm.... delete a hawk, I probably would not post it immediately and dispose of the evidence thoroughly.
I have looked into the law. It was a topic on the old timers thread. Hawks are protected by state and federal law. The NYS portion is pretty sparse but it does state if you must kill a hawk you need both state and federal papers to fill out. In other words....you can't kill them. so if you accidentally dispatch a round that accidentally puts a hawk out of existence.... tell no one, it never happened. I heard nothing. This tape will self destruct in 5 seconds........

I didn't actually kill the hawk. I did want to though. It's frustrating watching the thing sit there all afternoon just waiting for the chance to eat one of my birds.

well if you do you didn't. If you know what I mean. My hawks seem to stay away since a few pairs of ravens moved in and a murder of crows. Winter and hawks is always the worst for me though

I would assume diet will affect their poop, but they can eat the exact same thing every day and have different varieties. There was a thread on here a while ago that showed all the "normal" kinds, I can't find it but this should help, http://chat.allotment.org.uk/index.php?topic=17568.0 it has all sorts of pics of what is normal and whatis not

Great thank you !!!

I just checked & the girls poop falls under normal lol

I am a newbie and have a quick question for you. My girls get layer pellets every day and fresh grass, veggies (either greens, cantelope, watermelon, tomatoes) every day. I also try & let them out to roam the yard every day. They love the bugs around the garden & wood pile :) They also get some BOSS or crack corn every few days to encourage them to scratch up their run,

They even tried some cube steak leftovers yesterday. Loved it !!! And one of the girls who wasnt near plate came squaking over with her wings flapping cuz she realized her sister had some tasty treats lol

My question is that the girls who came running over had some yellow poop. Does chicken poop change colors depending on what they eat? They are all acting happy & healthy. Eyes are clear and their feathers look ok. (they are starting to molt so they all look a little haggard) She is in fact very vocal and loves to flap her wings lol

poop comes in all shapes, colors, sizes and textures. Gross! It's normal.

I am curious what the written law is on this. As far as I know, under no circumstance is someone to cause harm to a hawk. It's a felony and they take it quite seriously.

ROFL!!!

I don't think there's any law that says we can't make it miserable to be near you! But it would take a lot. A long time ago there was a hawk in our backyard getting wild birds in my feeder. I threw rocks to hit the tree and scare it away. It was almost comical in the way it watched the rock go by. Didn't even flinch.

I'm a bit worried about winter, too. I'm planning on fencing in a much smaller area outside the coop and covering it with deer netting. I would rest so much easier!

Is it normal for my chickens NOT to have started moulting? I see a lot of white feathers in the run, but everyone still looks full feathered. Not that I'm complaining. How long does it take for them to moult?

Me too. The crows and ravens are still around. I can hear the hawks in the distance...eeeeeeeeeee, but they are staying clear.

The BLRW/SS cross I was pretty sure was a cockerel due to early comb and wattle development and late tail development has turned out to be a rather lovely pullet with an unmistakably feminine figure. I don't know if I have ANY boys. There's one Brahma cross in my youngest group who appears to be a male, but that looks like it. My sister's three birds are all pullets. My four oldest chicks here are all pullets, and are getting to point-of-lay. The middle three look like they're all girls, and at least two out of the youngest three are most likely to be girls as well. My chickens are pullet-producing machines! Good for eggs, not so hot for freezer camp! Captain Morgan is hopelessly outnumbered. He's very quiet all night now - he's probably exhausted from wrangling all those wives.

I have Rancher's eggs under two broodies now, as Lenore the Jersey Not-So-Giant has gone broody. Watch - all of those will be cockerels.

Do you mean-TASTY cockerels?

I am so excited, the americauna rooster who had so little impulse control was dancing for one of the BR gabbys they are just starting to lay. (3 pullets that I can't tell apart, all named Gabby). There may be hope for that boy!
