Javagirl asked me to post for her (her computer is broken) that there will be a poultry swap at the Altamont fair grounds on nov 11.
The swap will be at the street gate parking lot on nov 11 from 11am to 3pm.

"If you rsvps before 6pm on nov 10th that you are coming to sell it will be a 5.00 seller fee. Or if you just show up there, its 10.00 sellers fee. The contact info is mohawkval[email protected] to rsvps or ask questions.."
Is anyone on here going to the swap?

Got home later than usual from work as a single parent did not want to leave her small daughter with a babysitter, so I stayed late. Came home to no power. Moved coops in the twilight to get them away from trees and moved the fencing along with them. moved all birds in hop coop to a small permanent coop with permanent fencing. put the horses rain coats on fed them inside, but left their doors open. It wasn't that windy in there. Got done about 7:30. Didnot feel like cooking so we went out for pizza(had that for breakfast as well!). Just got the power on. Other than power outage and some branches down, we fared fine. Gotta' go to work though. everyone have a good day!!

Well, very glad that those of you who wrote in are safe. Hoping to hear everyone fared well. We had a total nonevent, which I know I should be grateful for...the chickens were unhappy to stay in the coop all day yesterday, but they are out today. Hope everyone else is safe, and their animals too.

All's well here, no power outage so the basement is dry, the pumps are keeping the water under the "lip" of the holes they sit in... the enclosure did exceptionally well in protecting the flock, only one tie strap broke and I fixed that during one of my hourly checks late last night. Friends down in the valley have no power and basically the town of Gilboa has no power or cell phone signal, but all the roads were clear and passable, crews were clearing down trees and branches as fast as they fell it seemed. we still have high winds, rain is coming down sideways, but the sky is clearing in patches and the sun is peeking through. I'll let the gang out in a little while if it keeps improving. they only have supervised free range here and I'm not in the mood really to stand out in the rain if it's going to just blow in my face...

We did fine here, too. Very wet and some nasty wind, but we didn't lose power and our new addition on the coop stood strong. They cancelled school today, which means no work for me. Yay! We woke this morning to it being fairly calm and very little rain.
I introduced the two flocks together this morning. All has gone very well. My top original roo (pictured in my avatar) has behaved perfectly. He does his little dance to show the new roos he's top dog but has not been aggressive in the least. He's been talking to the new pullets. Our other original rooster has been a little aggressive but has not done damage.
Does anyone know...
My australorps all came from Cackle hatchery at 1 day old. Can I breed them, or is there too much chance of interbreeding? Or am I overthinking this?

Just got back from a Newfoundland draft test about an hour from here. The newf get hitched up to little wagons and manoever through course with figure 8s and narrow spaces, right angle turns etc. The weather was not too bad when I left home, but it got worse as time went on. All the humans were cold and damp. Highlight of the trip was my seat heater! Best invention ever.
Now that Im warmer and dryer, it's time to gather up potted plants and decorative squashs so they don't fly through the windows. We should be pretty snug. Propane heat and hot water, a fireplace for atmosphere, a generator...flashlights and candles...Yup. Wind is predicted to be coming from the NNW then NNE, and that side has less windows, and is protected by woods from the biggest winds. The woods are not close to the house. So am cautiously optimistic.
Gearing up for these events takes a lot of energy, and I really want everyone to be safe, no casualties, or damages. BUT, if it is a nonevent entirely, like a rainy day, I will want to kick the weather people. It is best if we are warned, take action and weather an exciting event safely.
That sounds cool !
Do you have a link to it (web site) ?
Good to hear you are all OK !!!

we have had sun up until a few mins. ago. As for the storm it wasn't bad at all here. Tho o was up off and on all night wondering how all was..all the chickens and goats were fine..on a sad note I loss one of my white homers to a hawk attack. It took it right in the sky. The hawk landed over in a hedge roll I ran over and grabbed the pigeon back. It died in my arms. My husband thinks I am crazy for crying..the white homers are beautiful in flight!
Glad to see everyone is fine!
