NY chicken lover!!!!

I dodged the peeping bullet for at least another day or couple of days... my guy isn't going to make it up tonight, maybe tomorrow, but most likely Tuesday. he's got himself all in a tizzy because he drank a big swig of 6 month old rainwater that has been sitting in a "dirty fish tank water" bucket. he uses the rain water to water his plants... but for some reason, he filled a drinking water bottle instead of a plastic cup... didn't use it all, left it sitting on the counter, forgot what it was and later, took a couple of vitamins with that bottle.of water. so, because he is the Ultimate King of Drama... he won't leave Columbia county in fear of needing to go to the hospital. (We do have a hospital here...

) I don't think anything will happen that fast... I mean, sure... probably has bacteria, maybe a parasite... but it won't show for days or weeks. Probably nothing to worry about at all, but I'll hear about it for the next 6 months.
speaking of drama... there was a bit here today. the furnace wasn't working, so the guy came up today, got the furnace started, but there was too much oil or something burning off, and the whole basement filled with blue smoke. I only noticed because it was seeping into the kitchen, so I ran out to the back of the house, pulled open the storm cellar doors, ran in to see if the guy was still alive... he was, how he could stay in there was beyond me... so I ran back around, up the stairs, grabbed a big fan, ran back out and around... got the air moving ~ throwing open the cellar doors was a big help... then, I go back in ~ what was small seepage in the kitchen had turned into major plumes of blue smoke, the kitchen was filled and it was rapidly filling the living room ~ the chicks are in there! so I grab them, go outside to make sure the air is clear in the box... they are all fine, so I throw a blanket over the top and run them upstairs to my bedroom. That door is always closed, or my bed would be covered in cat hair... and the room is completely clear of smoke... I left them up there for about 5 hours, just to be sure... oh yeah... now I have to go back out and close the cellar doors... don't want critters moving in overnight!

I don't post here often but I try to read every day and your strength has been amazing. I love the picture, it's beautiful.

I do have a question for everyone. I'm looking to buy an incubator, just a small one. I don't plan on hatching too many. Key word there is plan...I mean who am I kidding haha
The problem is I'm not really sure where to start looking/what the best ones are. I've been looking on amazon a bit and the reviews are all over the place and not always reliable...I don't mind turning them, however automatic turning would be a plus.

What's the budget? I bought a used brinsea advance EX on ebay a few years back and it's idiot proof. Does humidity, turning, etc. Only holds 20 eggs, but I've been able to squeeze 30+ in :) :)

I've had a Hovabator Genesis for 7years now. I used it as an incubator for 2 years, then when the eggs didn't fit in anymore, bought a Sportsman. I still use it for the last 3 days & hatch in there because I don't want my Sportsman getting gunked up by chick dander.

Forgot to say, it is digital, so you don't have fiddle with the temp. It holds the temperature very well. The other brand, don't buy a little giant whatever you do. I hate mine. I won it in a raffle thinking to use it as a back up for hatching, but I couldnt get the temperature to regulate and its not tall enough for large breeds...just isn't a good incubator.

Cheeka,
Not pleasant to have a smoke filled house... especially oily smoke! Yuck! Hope you got it all aired out.

I have a Little Giant that I used 2 years ago, but for reptile eggs. I didn't have to open and close it except for once a week, but for reptile eggs, an incubator must keep perfect temp with a +1 or -1 degree temp fluctuation. Mine always kept it exact, on the dot. You can purchase automatic turners for it. It was $45 or $50 at TSC, and I believe automatic turners run somewhere around $50. That's what I will be using this spring.

My darn chickens have not taken to the nipple waterer too well. They have learned to drink from it, but they are not drinking enough. One hen kept desperately trying to get out of the run. Dummy me finally figured out she wanted to stainless steel pan I always used for them. I put it full of water in the run, and all 38 chickens drank from it at once. And drank, and drank, and drank. So now I have to rig something up using the aquarium heater and the stainless pan.
I rehomed one of my black australorp roosters (my sweetest one). Sunnysideupstateny gave him a good home. I have 1 more EE rooster to rehome. He's a great rooster, but he mates CONSTANTLY. I have 2 roos mating with 19 hens and a couple have some patches of feathers missing. My Henry doesn't mate nearly as often. If it weren't for that, he'd be an awesome rooster. He's beautiful, too! I did forewarn the guy who's probably taking him of the reason why he's got to go. So I will be left with Henry and 2 young BA roos that are just getting to mating age. I'm hoping they will be nice roos. One I'm not so sure about. We'll see!

I did, took a while, and all but one chick is fine. lost one this morning, little blonde with black eye liner with little white dots... so precious... got trampled in the night or something, she was so little, couldn't keep up with the rest, surely the smoke didn't help even if it was only a minute of exposure...
