NY chicken lover!!!!

Cheeka,
Not pleasant to have a smoke filled house... especially oily smoke! Yuck! Hope you got it all aired out.
Quote: My Henry doesn't mate nearly as often. If it weren't for that, he'd be an awesome rooster.
Ive read that Roosters only need to mate once to fertilize the eggs ..for about a week ..so the rest is just for fun ?

Hey everyone it's been a while since I have been on but it's been pretty sucky around here. Lost my whole flock of 15 about a month ago to a weasel! so now i have 5 5 month old blue and black silkies that i would like to find a home for. (cant handle the same thing happening to them!) I purchased them from sterlingsue def one roo started crowing 2-3 girls and one unsure they are all beautiful. I would like them to all go together. The remaining feed I have will also go with them. If interested please pm for the details! Thanks everyone.

So sorry to hear that.. We get so attached to them dont we ..?
Did you see the weasel ? Can you make your coop & run like fort nox ? That is what my son says about our coop & run ..I dont think it is though

Ends with "who pays the bills, does the work and eats the eggs?" Right?

Edited to add: When Ray (my SO) buys his first bag of feed, carries it to the coop (wheel barrow is broken), Opens it, fills the feeder, carries the bucket of water from the house to the waterer, adds wood chips to the nasty nest boxes and bring in the eggs, THAT'S when he gets to say how many chickens I have. Until then, not a peep or he gets NOTHING that contains eggs for life. (and he loves homemade cookies)

I'm happy that Alan never complains about the number of birds I've collected. I told him I'd ordered poults for the spring, and he said, "I know just where I'll build their house." The only thing I've seen him say, "oh, please, NO" on is piglets, and it's more of a "not yet." He knows it would be a losing battle anyway.

hey rancher... oh yes I do have CO detectors, regular battery operated ones, then when my stove started acting up (lower burner went bad in the oven) and the detector was going off all the time during cooking, my Dad suggested a better one, plugs into an outlet and shows a reading, and an accumulation level as well. even if it's not enough to trigger an alarm... I need to fix the stove still... but don't use the oven anymore, the broiler works, the stove top works... I have a couple of toaster ovens should I need to bake something... something small anyway, neither of them is particularly large... one is strictly for me, and is an uncontaminated by gluten oven, the other is for regular folks, mostly gluten free food goes in that one too, but my BH uses it for breads and so it's not suitable for me. all the rest of the chicks are fine, I don't think the oil smoke really had anything to do with the little one dying. she was runty and I probably should have given her sugar water... but she was having trouble keeping up before that... just a bummer bc she was one of 2 blondes, with such pretty markings already...

anyway, long day for me today, hope everyone enjoys their Monday!

jay, sorry to hear of your losses. It so hard to lose your birds.....Can you weasel proof your chicken coop and run so you can keep your silkies?

My Wife is similar. Her only request is to keep it under 100. Not really that hard to do. I wanted to do calves, she did not, I now see why, no more calves.

You want him to mate more??? That's why I'm getting rid of Oreo (nicknamed "whore-eo"... got the "H" from Henry's name accidentally one day and it stuck. It's very fitting.). I have the 2 roos mating and 19 hens they are mating with. One hen just started a bit of feather loss on her back. Oreo is just at it constantly and is quite rough with the girls. Henry, on the other hand, is a perfect gentleman and mates much less often. Before Oreo got to mating age, I had all fertilized eggs just from Henry.
He's already promised to someone, but if they don't take him, you are more than welcome to come get him!
