NY chicken lover!!!!

Hey All,
Hope all is well.

Tab ~ Hoping you're hanging in there! Many thoughts and prayers for you and your family!

Pearl is still sitting on her nest in the basement. It's been about a week now. I've been wanting to do some renovating of coops since we still have yet to get any snow! Seeing as how everyone is out free ranging together and getting along, I wanted to move the orpington coop closer to the silkie coop and try to unite the two some how. Not sure how that will work. I'm just glad the two orpington hens are getting along well with the silkie roo and hen out there. I could see them all living together in the same coop.

I think I've about had it with horseback riding lessons for the rest of this season. The weather has just been awful. I hadn't been since before Thanksgiving and finally went back yesterday (I'm only free on Thurs and Sundays to take them when DH is off from work). My whole body aches since I haven't been in weeks. I think we'll pick up again in Spring time/ after the holiday weather permitting. I don't see us having too many more nice days from here until into the new year.

The neighbor that owns the horse across the street came over one night to introduce herself. She said I am more than welcome to ride her horse whenever I want or do whatever while I'm over there. I told her I'm not that comfortable yet to grab someone else's horse and take him up a trail. LOL But I would love to get over there ad just spend time grooming him and what not. So today I go over there with my daughter and he's loose! He's wayyy in the back of my neighbor's pature, up against the other horse farm down the road. He must be making friends. I'm about to go down there and try to get him back into his own pasture before he wanders even further. His owner she's been having problems with the deer running out into the field and knocking the wire down from the posts. So now that they're laying on the ground he's just making his way out into the acres past the pasture.

When I get back I'd like to try candling some of these eggs that Pearl is sitting on. Not sure how I should go about that or IF I even should while she's sitting on them?!? Anyone got any suggestions?!?

My stinky butted prolapse chicken (in isolation) who I think has gleet keeps laying me eggs. Silly girl. :p I've even got her in the dark on limited rations but she keeps popping out the eggs.. How she does it, I don't know. Back in the dark with you lady!! =)

Set a few eggs for the NYD hatch.. what the heck am I thinking? Too many chickens here as it is. :)

It is tough to keep riding this time of year! I just try to keep my horse in training until I board(think INDOOR!!!) Between nasty weather and dark it is hard.

Grab a high powered flashlight and go out when it is dark and candle those eggs!! How long has she been sitting/?

Are you sticking the prolapsed vent back in after she lays an egg? I dont think it will go in by itself...........

Actually it is slooowly going back in. Less than an inch remains. I can't stick it back in because (look away if you are eating dinner!) she has what appears to be gleet and it's scabby and nasty. Been applying antifungals and it's looking better each day. I am very surprised she's laid me two eggs - she's on the chicken equivalent of bread and water and only gets light a few hours a day (bath time!). I went out with my flashlight and looked at pretty much every other chicken butt and no other cases to be seen. I think she got it from her extended 'wanna be broody' period of sitting.

Yum Gleet! =)

Anyone gone to the albany drive through light thing in washington park? is it worth the drive and $15? We love to look at lights but checked out both saratoga and glens falls and not much to be seen anywhere.. =(

Have to ask.

Have you checked your Dryer hose lately. DD noticed our dryer was not working properly. Pulled out the machine and the hose was crushed and split. We pulled everything out and cleaned it out. It was blocked pretty bad.

Do NOT use those plastic or easily crushed metal dryer hoses. I checked out Youtube and learned a few things.

Good thing DD checked or there could have been a fire.
Thanks for reminding me... we do need to check!
Yes, they will LOVE IT!

Good because I already gave them some! lol
Many people give black oil sunflower seeds(often seen written as BOSS) as a treat or scratch or mixed in their flock's feed in the winter for extra calories or to put a little extra shine on their birds.
I made a nice flock block last night and it came out awesome. I did the flour/corn syrup recipe and added some molasses, peanut butter, cereal and dried cranberries. Kale is tomorrow's treat, then the flock block the following day! Spoiled chickens.

What is the best way to bathe a chicken? Better to soak and pour water over them or to shower them? What temperature do they like best? I have one with a dirty butt.

Shes going on about a week now. So I'm wondering if it's even worth it to try? Or should I wait a couple more days?

Been doing that for my nasty butt chicken. I do it in a utility sink with a sprayer hose and fairly warm water.. with gloves. :p
