NY chicken lover!!!!

Hi did I misunderstand your post ? I thought you meant henry doesnt mate enough ..so hes not a awesome rooster ..<- Are you talking about Oreo ?
I thought you were saying you wanted ( Henry )him to mate more ..as you are talking about him in the sentence before

I am saying he doesnt have to do it more than once a week to fertilize a week of eggs in a hen ..I was sticking up for Henry

Sorry if I was confusing. Henry does everything he needs to do perfectly. All the hens had fertile eggs when it was just Henry as my only roo. Not too often, but enough. Oreo (Whore-eo) is just a hormonal teenager and can't keep off the girls. And I want roos with brown egg traits anyways.

My australorps may be almost ready to lay. I found 2 oops eggs last week! They will be 22 weeks on Monday. 15 more hens layin'!

My girls got spoiled late in the summer with free ranging. Then my neighbor had to move and asked me to babysit her 17 bantams. After some squaking and bullying everyone seemed fine. Then all of a sudden our nightly head count was off. I figured they weren't into the roosting routine and found shelter in the pines. Boy was I ever wrong! A hawk has picked off three roos and two hens. I am just sick over this especially since they aren't my birds. They are locked up in the coop and only let out if we can be right there. Anyone ever been chastised by RIR hens??? Wow can they be sassy.
I have one hen that is so sassy.. she is a comet mix . She is called Dot ...when she is especially irritating ..I call Her Dot Dot Forget me not ..She doesnt let you forget her ..
Today she was Totally Irritating ..I could hear from inside the house ..Finally I opened the back door stuck my head out and said Loudly
" Bauck ! Bauck ! There how do you like it " They shut up for a while ..They wanted to get out too
I love reading this thread everyday. It's nice to see that I'm not alone in having spoiled chickens who think they own a pet human. My chickens have me so trained that all they have to do is make one sound and I know what they're asking for. Now they've learned to come up on my deck and peck at the door so I'll come out. If they get a cell phone I'm screwed. Unfortunately my neighborhood hawk has been making an appearance everyday this week. Today he sat on my deck railing until I ran outside to scare him away. Luckily my dog can hear the alarm call before I can and is racing to the door to scare the hawk away. I only give my girls a few hours of free time now because I have to be either outside with them or ready to run outside at any moment. Now that the age of 50 is knocking at my door I hope I don't have a heart attack when I'm sprinting outside.
Here's my dog keeping watch while I go on BYC.
Your almost 50 ..Time to take the baby aspirin once a day .
Oh no ! our chickens know where we live ? Mine have done that in the summer ...no pecking just looking in ...Where are you ?
We have a gate up on the deck now ..Keeps the deck poop free ..so you dont have to watch where you walk there..LOL
Quote: You have just made the shop Tooo Cozy ..maybe she is the smartest one . She delivers her eggs right to you .

No problem ..We know what we are saying...I always proof read my text ..coz it is not always clear to others .
I do descriptions for a living so I know some times it does make sense to others LOL

I have a Australorp Roo he is a gentleman too . Hens are comets & 1 RIR . I would like a few babies in the spring if someone tries to go broody ..I HOPE !
Did you say what breed Henry was ?

Morning all! Brisk outside this morning!

I managed to move 4 garden carts frull of pine chips into the terrorist run and 4 of leaves into the older ladies run. It was challenging because a few of the rir girls and red sexlinks decided to follow me everywhere and get under foot as I was doing all this hauling and moving. I kept telling them that if I tripped and fell, they were gonners! The boys were of no help whatsoever. Olaf thought about challenging me but my flapping of my "wings" and bawking low a few times changed his mind. I am hoping to get a few more loads in the terrorist run on saturday before all the nasty weather sets in. Keeps them busy and helps with the poop. Today everyone gets a cabbage hung. I like to put a screw in it and tie a rope to that and hang it up. We have started giving them the 21 percent egg producer from agway so we will see if there is any difference in a few weeks. I am going to try to make a flock block as well.

I think we have gotten our mouse problem under control. I dont hear them dancing in my walls or ceiling any more. We use snap traps and those new fangled traps in the garage. Usually is an instant kill. Quick and clean. Tried the glue traps once but they were messy and my dog stepped on one one time when he was rummaging in the garage. What a mess to get it off his paw! Still missing the big goofy guy. He was the chicken guardian and alarm system. House and yard is too quiet. Two more days till my baby is home!

I don't have rodent or snake problems at all. Cats. most effective method I've found... nothing makes it into the house alive often... and if it does, it doesn't stay alive long. I let my best mouser in the attic and the basement every few days during the change to cold weather. before the cats, I had ridiculous mice. I also had a ridiculous dog. she would not ever finish her bowl of food. the mice would steal it at night. I thought the dog was doing better with eating, til one night, I left a bowl of potato chips on the coffee table. in the morning, the bowl was empty. I found the chips under the cushion of a chair (it crunched when I sat down), so I lifted every cushion, and found a long row of dog kibble under the couch cushions. Set traps, caught a pair, then I got a cat, as I do not like to empty traps. Now, I have 4 cats, maybe a bit excessive, but they keep the property pretty clear, the neighbors property too...

I'm going to try to candle a few more tonight with my son. He wants to see them and apparently doesn't remember doing this in kindergarten just last year. It was definitely neat to see, especially for me as it was my first time candling. I didn't think I'd be able to make anything out at all. Definitely very cool!

Went out this am, 1 small squirrel and 3 mice. None inside the house which is good.

Now I haven't mentioned it but I've got some good news. I know many are going through lots of stuff and I think this time of year seems to magnify things.

Anyhow Julia and Keith have been trying to have another baby for years and years. They did have two little girls born but both with so many health problems they didn't live long. Their last daughter lived for months and month before she passed.

Well last week they were blessed with a healthy baby boy. Elliot Jackson. just over 6lbs and 21 inches long.
