NY chicken lover!!!!

Merry Christmas Everyone!

Hope everyone had a great holiday and is getting ready for the new year! :)

We are up to 3 partridge chicks, not sure if I mentioned that the last time I posted. Pearl is sitting on the last three eggs, one of which I know has nothing going on inside of it. If these last 2 eggs don't hatch in the next few days will it be ok to remove Pearl from the chicks? I want them to be raised by us and used to us handling them and what not. I can't do that Pearl in there cuz she goes nuts when I just try to change the water or place new food in there. Hoping I can do it soon.

The chickens were so happy yesterday. I cooked a large chicken for soup and gave them the carcass. The only thing left this morning was a few larger bones. lol Cannibals.

They crack me up with this snow. I can leave the door to the coop open and they stand in the doorway like there's an invisible force field blocking them. They don't like the snow at all.

Mine are kind of snow shocked too ! I lead them out with a trail of bread crumbs & a shoveled walkway with grass showing on the bottom..
Food usually makes them move out ! LOL
I hope everyone had a nice day with their families

You can take them away from the momma as soon as they hatch and dry, if you so desire. Make sure you have small sized items for them to eat and drink out of and a heat source. (Usually a heat lamp with enough space so they can get in a cooler place to prevent over heating.) But why do you want to do that? It is soooo much easier to let momma raise them, especially when it comes to intigration with the flock. You can still handle them and earn their trust as they grow. I only have ONE bird that won't let me pick her up and she was raised in a brooder. The rest tolerate my attention and some love it, even the broody raised ones.

I'm Irish my family celebrates celebrating. For years I thought I was named after "Jack Daniels" the whisky. I only realized it was a long lost ancestor a few years ago. Don't feel to bad for me though. Feel bad for my sister "Black Velvet".

What Cass said X 2!! If you have a broody let her raise them!! Let them acclimate to the outdoors with momma. So much easier. Handle them in the early AM or at dusk when it it darker out so broody doesn't get so upset.

Pharm - congrats on the incubators I think. Hope you have many successful hatches.

Lapereen - no-frost hydrant, electrical panel and a few boxes for lights, huh? Now if you want to hatch your own come and see me for eggs.

Marsq - You are insane. What are you hatching? I've no where to put chicks just yet.

Tab - I am so sorry for your loss. I haven't mentioned it but we have a friend, my DD's classmate who has colon cancer. 30-31. Just had her second child.

On Stony's note. It is freezing out and all the chickens in the hoop coops are alive and kicking. I was worried because the side half hoop just has an overhang and on side covered with fleece. The other coop has just the covered run with open front and fleece on the door. They don't seem any worse for wear. Lord have mercy my fingers were still tingling 15 minutes after I came indoors.

I have chickens I CAN'T keep from living in tree's as much as I try. They get rained on, snowed on, fleeted on and always survive the elements thriving. They live in the tree's when it is 20 below zero and windy. and are just fine. Many have been doing this for 4 years. All of that garbage about chickens dying if there is a draft is just that...garbage. I'm not being sarcastic... they are birds and survived 10,000 years or more before humans made them weaker.

Well now I can't argue with that. Many have the utility bred out of them. Good looks don't put the food on the table.

Right now I have a Del hen that can't seem to walk on her legs. She's walking on her hocks. I don't know why I don't just wring her neck and be done with it. She's no good for breeding and she's not laying egg of course. She is by herself but will never be back with the flock. Can't in good conscience give her away. She is standing now, but she's no good other than a pet. Which I don't have time for.

Anyhow I work for hardiness and utility. All the money spent babying them just makes things worse it seems. Gotta keep that humidity down. Clean and dry. Just like us.
