NY chicken lover!!!!

Yes and one of those ladies are the Momma!

Ducks are messy and I try getting some every year but always end up giving them to a friend that has pretty much all waterfowl. He is 2 miles away and I can visit whenever I want. So, I keep them now and if it dosen't work out I have a great place for them to go. I do have Mandarin ducks and they are great. Not too messy and very pretty. I am hoping with these being on the smaller size they will be good as well.

They are alot better in many ways. I just found a link to a comparison chart.

The farmer's markets up here are almost that much for duck eggs. Amazing, and great if you are the one with the eggs.... I sell chicken eggs for $2.50 dozen and I never have any on hand. They are always gone within 24 hours of being laid. A friend up the road charges $4/doz but he still has some around after a couple of days. I would rather have them gone. A bird (egg) in the hand is better than 2 in the bush. Right?

It's very wet here and the water is not draining to the creek fast enough. Clearly there are some trenches to be re-dug so they slope away from the yard. Ugh. I'm tired of water.

Last year I prayed for no snow and we nearly got it. It was a very dry summer and I do wish this summer would be only half as dry. My water bill from watering the garden was high.

Keeping ducks would not aleviate my frustration over the water. I really don't need more work cleaning ducks. Chickens are enough for now.

Take care and stay dry,

Rancher

at least with my duckers, no pecking order issues, ever. Even introducing new ducks. They actually seem genuinely happy to meet new ducks. The eggs are beyond massive and delicious. A minute factor, but having all of the eggs 1st thing in the morning is REALLY helpful when the temp is below freezing. They play all of the time. Constant entertainment. All day long they play, I call it duck olympics. In and out of the water, chasing each other. They always look happy. Tail feather shaking, "funky ducking" wing flapping good times. And yes, cute as a button. Did I mention the eggs are killer?

Out to lock up all of the coops . I'll be SO glad when mud season is over, even if the duckers (or as I call to them "Duckairs..... yelled like Hey Mr. Kottair.... horseshack....lol) ...anyway I'll be glad when mud season is over even if the duckers are having the times of their lives,

btw they seem pretty jealous of flying ducks. Lots of puzzled one eye to the sky looks every night as the wild black ducks are flying overhead as I'm locking up the duckers

Sounds like plenty of reasons to go daffy over ducks!

Going to put this up again and hope it doesn't irritate anyone to see it twice. Just disregard if you've already seen it and are not interested.

My friend has a RIR rooster, hatched May 2012, that she would like to find a good home for.
She has only 1 hen and still has a few roos left from that hatch; the hen gets far too much "attention".

I think mderby is going to take her white leghorn, and my friend wants to keep the low-ranking roo who was the last to hatch from this group. So.... this leaves 1 more roo to go!

He's free, as you'd expect.

Thanks for considering &/or spreading the word.

Have you applied for a variance? There are some web sites that can help in getting thing changed. It just takes some research.
here in albany this fight has been fought by many from every angle and jerry jennings just will not seem to budge, its sad, i don't live in albany but nearbye and i catch the news......i sympathize with those who would love chickens and live there.

They are not sure Yet ..We think they bonded with us today ..
I was holding them both ..one chick looked at my son kind of rubber necking ( he is taller than me)
She then flew up on top of his head ..So Funny ...he is like ..is she pooping on me ? get her down before she does .
Young chicks dont /havent learned manners yet ...I gotta go ..plop..
The hens we raised from babies dont poop on me when I pick them up usually ..
Sometimes they act like they like us ..then the next time they are running away from these scarey giants ..

They learned today that food is found in fingers & hands ...so they are thinking ..They may be alright .
They cried again when they were covered up for bed ..

Annie! I went over and saw the baby ducklings last night. Definitely five stars on the cuteness factor! Seriously, between the cuteness factor and being "on sale", what's a girl to do, right? lol

So I did a bad thing this morning. I went to TSC. I just needed to get threaded screw fence gate holder thingies and there were khaki Campbell ducklings on clearance for $2.50 each. There were 14. I bought them all. I have a friend that has a lot of ducks and he said that he would brood them and that he actually will buy the majority of them from me, I called him first to see if he wanted any. I will probably keep 6. They are so cute!!

I know. When I went to TSC and saw the bargains I had to call him. I knew he couldn't refuse. Did he tell you he might end up with ours anyway. Good guy! I do like the size that the Campbell's will grow to. Smaller duck and not much bigger than the leghorns. Maybe we will keep them. Hope so. I just don't like too much mess. Everything I have read about them says that they can lay up to 340 eggs a year. Now that's production!!
