NY chicken lover!!!!

Well my bator just went into lockdown. Fingers are crossed!
I need to find some egg customers. I have 12 dozen in my fridge and I'm out of room. I give a lot away but would like to make some of the feed money back. I live on a back road in the woods so I'm not sure a sign will help but I'm gonna try. I may make some flyers up. Not a lot of people like fresh eggs these days. They just don't realize how much better they are. I'm gonna sell them for 2.50 since there is few people around who sell for 3.00. I get 2 dozen a day now and in July when my chicks start laying I will get twice that! LOL good thing my kids love eggs.

I have seen a few of those signs cropping up and all I can think is "I WANT MY CHICKS TO GET OLDER!"

Also, does anyone know about filing to become a farm in our state? I'm doing a lot of fruit and veggie growing this summer and I'll be trying to sell.

My fiancee had the look of "what the heck is wrong with you!" when I came home with 12 more chicks the other day. We live with his mother and thankfully she was all "we can sell the eggs for over $3 a dozen? Bring on the hens!"
Guy from my work was offering to buy the whole bin at TS for 30. Lady told him if there is only 30 sure. I told him his wife is going to kill him. He's just like she brought me here. I wish my wife was that into chickens. I can barely get her to lay claim to her little bantam she picked out.
LOL My neighbor across the street put up her egg sign last week and I noticed she raised the price of her eggs this year to $3 a dozen. Last year she had them going for only $2. We get a lot of traffic on our road with it being a state route so a lot of people stop for them.
lady at work sells for $2.00 at work. I don't get too much traffic on my road but i don't see many peeps selling around me i may try 250 see how it goes. I may have to peddle wares in mother inlaws house also since she lives in town.

no idea i thought about it but then got wondering how much my property tax would go up for being a farm. father inlaw told me to try so i could get a discount on a tractor to mow lawn. if you find out anything let me know though.

10,000 in sales for 3 years in a row will get you a 50% discount on your school taxes for the property used. I've looked into it. Lofty goal. Taxes don't go up for being a farm. BUT you must be zone agricultural as I am

I thought the paperwork I found said over three years, not each year for three years. Hmm, need to go check that again.

I'm zoned Res/Agri so I think I can do it!

Well I just put 10 eggs under a broody in my main layer flock and 8 eggs under a broody bantam. I have 2 more hens that I think are broody also. I'll have to wait and see.

edited to add: I forgot to mention the 90 eggs that we have in the frigabator.

My flock is quickly dwindling down to nothing. Amazing how much info I've gained in the past two days and what changes I've decided to make. I just rehomed the last of my chicks from the trio that hatched back in December. I decided I do NOT want to hatch anymore eggs from Pearl and Duncan, my silkies, because that color combo is going to throw some funky unrecognizable colors. Especially with Duncan being a lavender split. So I'm down to two silkies and two orpington hens. I am trying to locate some lavender silkie chicks or hatching eggs. Of course I'd have to run out and buy an incubator if I go the egg route. I'd rather get chicks. So if anyone knows of anyone who may have some lavender chicks (I will order as many as 6 and rehome whatever I don't need, looking to get at least 2 good looking hens out of the batch) OR lavender hatching eggs (I will buy a dozen) could you let me know? Thanks! I've already contacted two people, still waiting to hear back.

I got a line on a Comet, Wyandotte, and Australorp from Craigslist. I'm just hoping they're still available in May. This is going to be a long month of waiting...

Did I miss your entrance? Sorry if I did, but nice to have you in the coop just the same.

Winner winner chicken dinners! It took us three hours from start to finish, mostly because we ended up skinning instead of plucking (we couldn't keep the water hot enough - note to self: get an outdoor setup) and it got dark out. It'll be much quieter in the morning. We had three hatchet jobs and three cuts. Alan is now a cone convert, as he appreciated how quickly and peacefully they bleed out. The last roos standing are the Captain (who appears to appreciate the sudden lack of competition and not having his butt chased) and the Easter Egger (and, of course, my little squeaky-toy bantie).

Rancher, your Dels are amazing dual-purpose birds. Those bad boys dressed out nice and heavy, and they're only ten months. There is a lot of meat on those suckers.

I'm keeping one of them out to cook this weekend. The rest are going into the freezer.

I do like my Dels. Now DW called to say that a co-worker got a blood egg from the Orps. I've been holding back the BR's cuz I know one of them is laying one,but i don't know which. I just gave DS three dozen BR's cuz I can't use them all.

I was considering dumping the BR's if I can't get some hatched. I figured any new hens aren't likely to lay blood eggs since they won't hatch.

Which orp it is I don't know.

Anyone got any advice?
