NY chicken lover!!!!

This chick still doesn't have a name, but she seems to be really looking forward to when I can join the two groups of chicks (smaller, younger chicks are in the cage to the left).

Feeder with the new mason jar on it. I rigged up the holder with some old yarn. Based on my moms hanging planters.

Here's a shot of the chicks I bought the day I ran into Rancher in Country Max. Was susposed to be EEs and barred Rocks but one of them (the red/yellow one in the back) is neither. Not sure how she got in.

Well, I've been having panic attacks since this morning when I walked out and saw one of the barred rock hens kickboxing with another of my girls. Yep, they somehow got out of the run and, even though my neighbor has a flock that's actually closer to that run than mine is, they found my flock. Well, nothing I can really do now. I looked them over really good, checked their vents, etc. No mites or lice, which is fantastic, but they both appear to have scaly leg mites, which I hope they haven't managed to spread to my birds yet. Does anyone know if Sevin kills them? I know about the Vaseline treatment, but I'm just curious. No foamy eyes, no nasal discharge, no bad smell (and I swear if anyone had seen me sitting there smelling the head of a chicken for 3 minutes to be sure, they'd think I was crazy) no coughing, no sneezing. They're currently in a run where they can see my flock but not touch them, since if they have something, well, too late, the flock's exposed anyway. I'm hopeful, though, especially given that they're barred rocks and obviously hatchery quality that someone just got them as chicks from a hatchery or TSC to keep for eggs and that they didn't come from a big breeder or a huge flock that might have had illness. Their poop was FILLED with gravel, which I think they must have been eating instead of food, poor things, and one of them has very black poop, which I hope isn't a bad sign and is just due to lack of nutrition. No worms evident, woo! Anyway, they seem healthy so I have my fingers crossed.

However, one of them has a huge red comb and has grown spurs! She doesn't crow and she's a hen colored barred rock, mostly black. Plus my roosters didn't try to murder her and did the mating dance, so I think when it was just the two of them she took over rooster duties. Still, was I surprised to see those spurs!

This is such an adventure!

Okay, I had this egg the other day, just after we were discussing meat/blood spots. Eeeeewwwwww. I tossed it. I thought meat spots only affected one spot... not multiple spots. Anyone else ever have this? The outside of the shell was also quite speckled and rough.

I have read that eggs with speckles or spots are more likely to have "meat spots". Mind you it won't kill you but if you find it gross then I would toss it too. The worst for me is "blood eggs" these too won't kill you but I break eggs into a bowl one at a time before using them. Any blood eggs get tossed.

I tried a mirror but it didn't work. Rancher has some chicks for me but unfortunetly I can't get them until tomorrow. I hope she lasts that long I still can't get her to eat or drink.

I would hold her alot and give her sugar water with an eye dropper. Occasionally stick her beak in the water, making sure she gets a drink.

I suppose you could treat them with Duramycin or one of the "mycins" and dust them real good with DE. I'd keep an eye on them. If you want to take it a step farther you could vaseline all the legs and feet too.

By all means keep them dry.

I have brown leghorn chicks. Piles of them! 34 I think actually. If you need a few send me a PM. Not sure how far away you are though.

I'm in Cortland County, I got your bbs Orp chicks last year by chicken train. I will be up to Tab's on the 27th for a friend's wedding, then picking up chicks for a local chicken loving friend (the one that took the big Black Orp roo). If anyone is heading between Albany and Vernon this week, I'll take you up on the chick offer.

I go out to close up the birds for the night and the barred rocks are in my coop. One of them is getting named Houdini if they stay around. Sigh I guess everybody's getting treated for scaly leg mites. I'm beginning to think I know how they ended up out there. They just escaped their run and never looked back.
