Well, I've been having panic attacks since this morning when I walked out and saw one of the barred rock hens kickboxing with another of my girls. Yep, they somehow got out of the run and, even though my neighbor has a flock that's actually closer to that run than mine is, they found my flock. Well, nothing I can really do now. I looked them over really good, checked their vents, etc. No mites or lice, which is fantastic, but they both appear to have scaly leg mites, which I hope they haven't managed to spread to my birds yet. Does anyone know if Sevin kills them? I know about the Vaseline treatment, but I'm just curious. No foamy eyes, no nasal discharge, no bad smell (and I swear if anyone had seen me sitting there smelling the head of a chicken for 3 minutes to be sure, they'd think I was crazy) no coughing, no sneezing. They're currently in a run where they can see my flock but not touch them, since if they have something, well, too late, the flock's exposed anyway. I'm hopeful, though, especially given that they're barred rocks and obviously hatchery quality that someone just got them as chicks from a hatchery or TSC to keep for eggs and that they didn't come from a big breeder or a huge flock that might have had illness. Their poop was FILLED with gravel, which I think they must have been eating instead of food, poor things, and one of them has very black poop, which I hope isn't a bad sign and is just due to lack of nutrition. No worms evident, woo! Anyway, they seem healthy so I have my fingers crossed.
However, one of them has a huge red comb and has grown spurs! She doesn't crow and she's a hen colored barred rock, mostly black. Plus my roosters didn't try to murder her and did the mating dance, so I think when it was just the two of them she took over rooster duties. Still, was I surprised to see those spurs!
