NY chicken lover!!!!

Off to the pharm for another fun filled day. Love how people tell my pharmacist she is misinformed when she answers their questions. Why ask a professional if you already believe you know the answer and that answer is different from the professional???? Love my job!

That drives me batty (well, battier than usual). I think they want to show off their "knowledge" from the Internet. I love spending several minutes talking to somebody and then being told, "well, my uncle's cousin's dog groomer's hairdresser's ex-husband's stepmother says use this, so I'm going to go with this." You're welcome!

Ok so on top of new chicks I droped a lump sum at home depot today. But I also built some addons to my brooder. Just 2 new roosts also took out my little jungle gym roosts bars which did no good. So here is two pics of new bars being used and I think they fight over them cause I keep hearing them move around so much more now. Btw I see someone getting a poo head if they don't move. Kind of tight area for 11 chicks now since some getting big, 42x44in area. I've still have yet to have to use my blu-kote cept to mark my sons bird which I don't have to do no more since it's more golden than brown/redish. I don't think it should have been in the red pullet bin at TS. So I don't think it's too small for them. I hope to have coop done in next week or two seeing I just bought 8 4x4x12 and 35 2x4x8 and 4 packs of singles. Still need to get 2x4x10's and some plywood for roof. This will still look like a monkey only using his tail to build it did my coop. I thought my wood working was fine till DW desided that my "tree house" was a "tree stand". I grew up where we built our own stuff in woods if we had a roof it was really another floor. She wants walls and roof for kids little tree house. I didn't need those growing up and we slept out in ours no problem put a fire by it and some sleeping bags. Then again my wife was as I like to tell her "sheltered". Any ways here's some pics.

edit changed to a 100 watt bulb from 240. I probably don't need any but with chicks rangeing in age figure have some heat, no 60 watt red bulb at home depot sadly. We also only keep our house at like 60-65 sometimes 68 if we have people over so they need the heat I think at least.

I'm beginning to think that my head cold may be a sinus infection. How would I be able to tell? I need to find out if urgent care has hours on sunday. I feel better during the day but before bed and when I wake up are the worst.

I was liking the idea of brown leghorns, but DH said no we should stick with the color we have.

i asked my mom about urgent care hours because of my sinus. I was told I need to get the chickens out of my house because they cause dust that can damage my lungs. She said to google it. I only keep newborns in the house for a week or 2 then they get moved to the barn. If its not the chickens she tells me my house has mold in the drop ceiling or my carpets are awful. It bugs me that most things I try to talk to her about come to a bash the things I care about fest. She is always so critical of me and the sad part is is that I don't think she realizes it. She has had it rough. I love her so I shrug it off and ignore it, but it hurts.

Well, I've been having panic attacks since this morning when I walked out and saw one of the barred rock hens kickboxing with another of my girls. Yep, they somehow got out of the run and, even though my neighbor has a flock that's actually closer to that run than mine is, they found my flock. Well, nothing I can really do now. I looked them over really good, checked their vents, etc. No mites or lice, which is fantastic, but they both appear to have scaly leg mites, which I hope they haven't managed to spread to my birds yet. Does anyone know if Sevin kills them? I know about the Vaseline treatment, but I'm just curious. No foamy eyes, no nasal discharge, no bad smell (and I swear if anyone had seen me sitting there smelling the head of a chicken for 3 minutes to be sure, they'd think I was crazy) no coughing, no sneezing. They're currently in a run where they can see my flock but not touch them, since if they have something, well, too late, the flock's exposed anyway. I'm hopeful, though, especially given that they're barred rocks and obviously hatchery quality that someone just got them as chicks from a hatchery or TSC to keep for eggs and that they didn't come from a big breeder or a huge flock that might have had illness. Their poop was FILLED with gravel, which I think they must have been eating instead of food, poor things, and one of them has very black poop, which I hope isn't a bad sign and is just due to lack of nutrition. No worms evident, woo! Anyway, they seem healthy so I have my fingers crossed.

However, one of them has a huge red comb and has grown spurs! She doesn't crow and she's a hen colored barred rock, mostly black. Plus my roosters didn't try to murder her and did the mating dance, so I think when it was just the two of them she took over rooster duties. Still, was I surprised to see those spurs!
I have a leghorn, who is an excellent layer, who has spurs!

Question: I'd like to feed my flock non GMO feeds. What is everyone else feeding? What's a good mix that doesn't involve corn?
I use Green mountain feeds. They have a non soy pellet, pellets with soy, and a coarse layer. They all contain corn. I start with the coarse layer and add whole grains and fertrells poultry balancer. There are other organic companies. Try and find one near you.
