NY chicken lover!!!!

It's been an emotional week so far....first I think I may have murdered developing eggs, and this morning my 3 day old Mottled Houdan chick died unexpectedly.
Nook, so sorry to hear about the chick, it hard when that happens. Good luck on the eggs, though I don't know anything about hatching.

Hello all. Western NY here. West of Rochester half an hour. I am doing chickens(meat) for the first time this year, can't wait. I also want to do turkeys but they are so expensive. Does anyone have any extras to sell? Also thinking about ducks. Thanks!

Ok they should never allow you to buy this many bantams at once. These little guys are a pain in the rear. They keep filling they're water up with shaveings I just hung the water dispenser alittle above the shaveings and they still filled it.

LOL mine are doing that too, I just think it shows what great foragers they will be, keeping my yard bugs and weeds down! :) At a week old they already go nuts over live mealworms, where my 6 week LF pullets just look at them!

TOB wanted to say that the coop is looking great! Lots of work there!

Stony congrats on the farm status too.

HELP!!!!

I'm posting this in the hatching section as well but I have a broody hen who sat on 4 eggs for 21 days. Today I checked on her and she moved boxes and 4 of the eggs she was sitting on are gone. There was an egg in the box she was in and it had a pip and there was peeping coming from it! What do I do?!?

if all 4 are gone and she is in a new nest and the egg is pipped she moved nests. Unless she was on more than 4 eggs? I am confused there. Anyway if you find the missing eggs put them under her. As for the egg she is sitting on and it is pipping and peeping, just let her hatch it. Slide it under her.

So I can slide the egg that pipped under her in her new nest and she won't reject it? She is a first time broody...she was on 4 eggs as of last night and then I just got home, had a look and she is in a new box and the box she was in now just has the one egg that has pipped and is peeping very loudly. I slid the egg under her in the new box but is it possible she ate the other 3 she was sitting on?

Oh no! I hope everything works out and you manage to save some of the eggs! At least the one that has pipped already. I wonder if they're so close to hatch day if you can "finish them off" under a heat lamp if you can get the area they'd be placed in at the right temp?? Sorry, I don't know anything hatching eggs yet. :-( Hope she takes the eggs back!

Tonight I'm going to party like it's (page #) 1999... Sorry. Couldn't resist.

Welcome!

Don't give up on them! Give them a few extra days.
Hope you are enjoying your day off. Here, the wind is really picking up (so sick of the wind) and clouds are piling up. Rain imminent, I guess.

I have heard that the better RIRs will be quite dark, not the paler version of what you often see. Not speaking from experience, obviously, just from what I've read.

While working outside so much recently, I've noticed lots of flying bugs (squashed the first mosquito of the year yesterday!), moths, even bees and wasps.

Me too. I have a moderate bee allergy I never did anything about. Finally made an appointment to get an EpiPen.
really nice!

Been too busy to keep up. Besides everything else I'm a legal farm now!

Something similar happened to a friend yesterday. Her first-time broody was sitting on eggs due in 2 days. She up and moved to a new nest with new eggs and they all died. So sad.

I am dealing with some egg breakers (only 1 or 2 a day). The eggs are not always eaten, which is making me think they may be breaking by accident. I do give them calcium, so they are not too thin. Now, one Tetra Tint who lays a green egg has been making one hole in the large end of the egg and that's it. It doesn't even break the membrane. Just plain WEIRD.
