NY chicken lover!!!!

Good morning all. I gave away 11 dozen eggs yesterday! I'm pretty excited :) I have decided after seeing all the pics that I must have some of Country boys eggs! LOL. I just need a broody hen first. If any one has one they want to get rid of or let me borrow let me know ;)

Morning Everyone,
Love all the pictures of the chicks! They're so cute!

My little chick didn't make it thru the night.

I thought for sure there was a chance he would make it after seeing his head was no longer on the ground yesterday afternoon. He was just looking so lifeless though. The other's are still in the shed alive and well. So at least I have those. Just still upset about this little guy. He definitely seemed like the most outgoing one for being the smallest in size. I just hope out of these 4 left I end up with at least 1 hen!!! Their combs haven't been changing much yet so still no way to tell.

Going to do some work on the coops today during my break from work. Clean them out good, throw some more DE in there. Gotta pick up more pine shavings from the feed store, ask where my ducklings are while I'm there. I decided I'm going to make my little pool for them on the side of my yard where the creek runs down from the mountain. I'm going to try to redirect some of that water into the pond and then have another hose from the pool go back into the stream. This way there will always be water in the pool but it won't overflow all day long.

I let the new BRs out to free range yesterday and get a "feel" for the yard. They stayed up by the coop for most of the day but eventually wandered off all over the property. It's like they've been here the whole time. They're so pretty, I'm really happy with them. They're going to be a nice addition to my two bigger girls. And I'm up to 4 brown eggs a day!

Off to work, Hope everyone has a great day!

Unfortunately there is more to broody hens than them being broody. If you were to find a hen that is broody, she would most likely break by the time you got her home. At least I think so.

absolutely. Natures incubator just doesn't work on command

You can google the barred or cuckoo breeds for sexing and while not 100% it's a pretty accurate method.  Barred Rocks are one side of the Rhodebar, Legbar etc. etc breeds.

I googled BR And Dominique... And got mixed results. The size of the head dot, the color of the feet and the color of the down all are factors. Head dot seems to be the least precise. Said males are on the grayish side o black and females are black. Also stated that the male has yellow feet and females are darker...my chick has 2 out of 3 traits female but the smeared head dot goes more toward male. I'm so confused... Haaa

From what I understand.

With the Cuckoo Marans (I had some) the males are lighter than the females.

I had both the Marans and Dominiques in my first order of hatchery. The combs will tell them appart. I'd go with the spots on the head and not the feet. Leg color changes as they grow.

I would try to determine the breed you got in "special". What were the possibilities? Since BR was not one we can safely rule that breed out.

I still think it's a CM roo. Based on , comb, lightness of color and spot on the head. Please let us know. We always get these questions but no one ever comes back to give us the answer. Which is why I usually don't even offer a guess.

If I had to guess, I'd say male also based on the lightness and the head dot. Can't guess on the breed tho -I'll leave that to the experts. :)
