NY chicken lover!!!!

You sound normal to me !
So do you do this every once in a while or did you see or hear something ?
We have a motion sensor light on the coop in front of the run door .
They were real safe last night ! when I went out this morning the run door wasnt latched ..AAAHHHH
It was closed just not latched ..Nobody to blame except me ..

I finally figured what the babies ( almost 9 weeks ) were screaming about !
When I shut them under the coop at night
they come into the run ...tonight ...looking up ..looking back & forth ...jump/ flying into the nest boxes..
One flies up on top of the coop door ..
They dont want to be on the floor they want to roost or be up like the big girls ..but not in with the big girls .
So Im like " Okay I will see what I can work out .
I have a small pet cage ...So I drag a old water softener bin into the run ...there are nesting boxes ..
With some boards underneath for stability ..We Have a Raised Cage ! They are looking around inside ...No Screaming !
It is small but they are Happy & they are up

Good detective work, Gramma! Your solution worked out perfectly. They look very content!

Well, my little ladies fared well last night. I just checked on them and doled out some breakfast. Aside from some squabbling, which Rancher has assured me is normal, they are doing what chickens do: scratching around, pecking and poking at things...I am in love with them already.

They make the cutest little noises. I guess that changes to bigger, less cute noises as they grow!

Last night when I peeked out into the backyard one last time, wouldn't you know I saw a raccoon in the tree outside my bedroom window? First one I have seen in almost a year! I was nervous enough 'til I saw that critter and remember how smart and persistent they are. So out into the night I go, armed with my kid's whiffle ball bat and a tempermental flashlight. Apparently, the raccoon has ESP as part of their vast endowments, so he or she had moved along by the time I got my middle-age arse around the back of the house. Between an asthma flare up and worry over birds, I woke up A LOT last night!

We have oranges out for the orioles, and that apparently caught the coon's interest. I will have to rethink the way I feed birds and such now. Birding is also a huge hobby for me, so I will have to find a good middle ground.

COOPED UP CHICK: That's exciting! "The Egg Song" !!!

Shouldn't be too much longer now!!

Grat TOB glad all worked out last night. Although I wouldn't be caught dead only armed with a whiffle ball bat. Coons are too mean for that. I slept on floor next to my youngest birds. I didn't feel like going up to bed. Wasn't as good of a sleep as I thought it would be though.....

This is a picture of the pavilion side of the yard...I actually mentioned to the Hubster and he Didn't Say No!! In all fairness I'll have to ask him again when he's not sleeping, but it will be greatly considered. I'm located in Ballston Spa. And a 1 year chicken fan. Depending on the weather people can bring their tents and camp in the yard... Or a cot and hunker down in the pavilion if need be. I'm kinda getting excited about the prospect!!! Much to consider....I don't wanna step on anybody's toes.
No worries. We show up at whoever's house volunteers to host. The first year (at Annies) we planned it because the "local" gathering was too far away for most of us on this thread. It was in the Watertown area that year. So now we plan our own and whoever can make it comes and the rest just wish they could drive that far.

Sounds like we are maybe starting to have a plan for the picnic. Sounds wonderful. We have rented portajohns for that cyclocross race we have here, and it seems like it is about a hundred for the weekend, but I think it is about that for a month...when we were building. Hmmmm, maybe a contribution from each of us? It would be worth 5 or so to me to have potty privileges that wouldn't be putting the host family's septic system in jeopardy.

Maybe I'll get into the studio today for auction items...may I use photos on this thread for inspiration?

Morning Everyone,
Attempting to let the new silkies out today. I'm sure they wont venture very far.

TOB: Glad you (and your new peeps) survived the first night!

Breella ~ Great looking roost! Your birds are very pretty too!

BREELLA,

Your set-up (and chickies) look GREAT!

Congrat's on all your hard work paying off.

How's the fat-nasty mare doing? Hope she's back up to her old cranky self.

Thank you. B*tchy Mare as I like to call her is well. She has narrowly avoided colic for the second time since my mother in law got her. I think all the hay she got into really helped her.

I don't mind if you use mine.

Thanks. Pearl got into a scuffle with my Cochin hen (was thinking roo, but not too sure) so I have her in the crate to the side for now. Waiting for everyone to be ok with her general presence before I try letting her out again. The poor cochin got her butt HANDED to her. Pearl was sitting on her and pecking at her head.

Wow, thats odd for her! LOL She was the one always being chased around here, thats why I kept her and my silkie roo cooped up most of the time.

I know she can have quite the attitude when broody. She's a protective momma.
