NY chicken lover!!!!

This is a picture of the pavilion side of the yard...I actually mentioned to the Hubster and he Didn't Say No!! In all fairness I'll have to ask him again when he's not sleeping, but it will be greatly considered. I'm located in Ballston Spa. And a 1 year chicken fan. Depending on the weather people can bring their tents and camp in the yard... Or a cot and hunker down in the pavilion if need be. I'm kinda getting excited about the prospect!!! Much to consider....I don't wanna step on anybody's toes.

Oh go ahead and step on some toes. What does the weather have to do with people in tents? If they don't leak they should be fine.

Well, my little ladies fared well last night. I just checked on them and doled out some breakfast. Aside from some squabbling, which Rancher has assured me is normal, they are doing what chickens do: scratching around, pecking and poking at things...I am in love with them already.

They make the cutest little noises. I guess that changes to bigger, less cute noises as they grow!

Last night when I peeked out into the backyard one last time, wouldn't you know I saw a raccoon in the tree outside my bedroom window? First one I have seen in almost a year! I was nervous enough 'til I saw that critter and remember how smart and persistent they are. So out into the night I go, armed with my kid's whiffle ball bat and a tempermental flashlight. Apparently, the raccoon has ESP as part of their vast endowments, so he or she had moved along by the time I got my middle-age arse around the back of the house. Between an asthma flare up and worry over birds, I woke up A LOT last night!

We have oranges out for the orioles, and that apparently caught the coon's interest. I will have to rethink the way I feed birds and such now. Birding is also a huge hobby for me, so I will have to find a good middle ground.

COOPED UP CHICK: That's exciting! "The Egg Song" !!!

Shouldn't be too much longer now!!

Well you'll just have to fill those boys up with soda and send them out back to leave their mark.

As for the whiffle bat? They might die laughing.

But don't feel to bad about losing sleep and going out there. I once had a hen that didn't come in and I was out there at 1 am in my bathrobe with a flash light calling "here chick, chick", cuz I thought I heard her in the middle of the night. I didn't find her but she showed up the next morning like it was not big deal.

No worries. We show up at whoever's house volunteers to host. The first year (at Annies) we planned it because the "local" gathering was too far away for most of us on this thread. It was in the Watertown area that year. So now we plan our own and whoever can make it comes and the rest just wish they could drive that far.

I'm not quite sure how to take that, but my motto is "the way to a friends house is never long".

Went to close the coop up and caught Pearl roosting on the spare food dish I had. It's one of those that mounts on the side of the dog crates for food/water.

Holy cow ...you are in the Adirondecks from me 153 miles, 2 hours 32 mins...WOW
Explains the great yard though ..You must have Bears also ..as well as other predators

Thanx, yard is a work in progress... We don't have Bears or many predators. We've got a couple Turkey Vultures that linger around. And a couple winters ago we were throwing scraps out on a stump for the fox..... We stopped all that when we started to consider Chickens. We've been really lucky so far!!!
